Computers need several programs to help it function better. The following are those I personally recommend for this. I will begin with protection, which is absolutely essential, followed by maintenance.
Protection:…
- Anti-Virus AVAST Free
- Firewall PCTools-Plus Free
Maintenance:…
- Windows Doctor
- Tuneup Utilities
As with any FREE program the providing manufacturer is constantly trying to persuade you to either UPGRADE, Try their TRIAL Offer, or BUY. My advice is to install whichever FREE program you choose and do it slowly, thereby not enabling any kind of payment required.
Windows has its own Firewall and I’ve yet to see any benefits for it being there. While PCTools-Plus is constantly monitoring while asking you, the Operator, for permission to allow whatever access to the Internet. PCTools-Plus was discontinued in about 2014, but is still available as a download from some web-sites.
Many use COMODO or ZONE-ALARM programs for their Anti-Virus & Firewall, but my personal impression is they allow far too many suspect programs free access to and from the Internet. And if any use any programs by a guy called Roger, who is a very Jolly kind of chap, you may very well end up with problems.
The quoted programs for Protection & Maintenance are what I use myself and fully endorse them.
I'm only too happy to give any assistance, if required. PM me.
I'm all for starting a computer club, should there be any sort of interest shown. The bar's a good enough venue, with free Wi-Fi.
