Does anyone know who is the most practical car hire company to use on a short visit? At present we are paying inflated rates for a full tank of petrol with far too much left in the tank following a short visit. As far as I know only Eonomy car hire allow for the car to be returned with a full tank when the rental duration is for three days or less, which is fine however, we often make four or five day visits that barely use half a tank.
Perhaps we as a community could set up a deal with a company such as Gold Car who operate out of both Murcia and Almeria airports that would allow us to return cars with a full tank although I have no idea how to go about this? Any suggestions?

Try using one of the UK Brokers - not directly with the rental company, as not only will you be able to get better rates you may be able to negotiate your fuelling terms.
You will need to make it clear that you wish to return the car with the tank full and have it confirmed.
Use the web to source the brokers and check all the prices, terms and conditions.
Very often each broker will have their own particular deal with the same rental company so virtual 'leg work' is required.
Make sure you are fully au fait with what you are getting for your money and whether there are any hidden extras. Reputable UK brokers should be completely transparent.

I've always used CarJet for car hire in Spain, and all of the companies they use will accept a full tank return for short hire periods (I think it's 3 days or less). It's a good idea to confirm when you pick up the car though. I had to pay for the tank of fuel when I collected the car and then get a refund on return. I didn't have any problems getting the refund.
Recently I used company given to me by Markfish, the name escapes me but they proved cheaper than carjet and used the same companies

Try "googling" car hire companies in Spain ES. I think you'll find that they offer cheaper rates and better cars. The only downside is the fact that all the literature is in spanish, but. thanks to the power of "google" you can use their translator.
Hope this helps,

I know that I am going beyond the original query, but this advice applies to all who undertake vehicle rental.
Just make sure you are fully aware whether or not there are going to be 'extras' to pay for. For example a rate may be quoted at a cheap price, but you find that it may not include insurance - usually there are two insurances, one for third party liability and another for damage caused to the car by other means and possibly another for breakdown insurance. There may also be other surcharges, taxes, and fees to pay. I previously mentioned using a UK broker, because when things go wrong it is generally easier to put them right. Don't forget that when you come to sign your agreement, check it thoroughly and if you are not happy or do not not fully understand your contract, sort it out before you you accept the vehicle also ensure that any defects are reported, noted and agreed by the rental company. It is tedious but essential.
Try using a few of the shopbots on the web for price comparisons.

That is what they told me at the counter in Murcia when I picked up my car the other week. I have read though that you can negotiate full/ full with them at the time of collection, but I didn't want to get anyone's hopes up of making a two week booking through an angent and being disappointed/ annoyed at not getting full/ full.

I advise anyone who wishes to pre-book their rental car to use a UK broker which may be found on the net by using a screenscraper.
Having found the best all inclusive price, contact the broker before booking and get them to confirm that you may return the vehicle with a full tank. If, for some reason, you are charged by the rental company, you should be able to get a refund back in the UK.
Make sure you are aware of any extra charges payable locally to the rental company, i.e out of hours prices, extra drivers and so on.
Unless you have a special arrangement direct with the car rental company it is always cheaper to use a broker in any event it does no harm to check.
If you prefer to wait until you arrive at the airport to hire a car, negotiate! This message was last edited by Grumpyoldgit on 4/30/2008.

Aurica Crown in Mojacar allow you to book the car with three days advance notice at a discount and they also have a facility for you to pick up at one airport and drop off in Mojacar or an other airport. Handy if you are searching for cheap flight s, doing a comparison with the different airlines.
We had a brand new car for €120 for the week.

This was on the website mse
the only company I have found in Spain is recordrentacar ,I have been ripped of a few times ,ie Reus airport ,but when you get a car from a record office you only pay for the fuel you use,but have to say I dont think it will be long before record follow the rest because in Palma airport 2 weeks ago I was asked if I wanted to pay for a full tank of fuel or even a half tank ,refused both

Record rent a cars policy from most airports is full/full, however when you book from Almeria they do not have an office and sub contract out to Auriga Crown and you are subject to their policy, which is pay for a full tank.

It does not follow that a particular car rental company will have the same T & C's for each location. You also have to remember that some locations are franchised so their conditions may be different.
I reiterate, check out the various deals on the web and ensure that they are like for like, in other words some may not include the insurance or extras and you have to pay at the location.
