A little more info with an expected start date

El Altet director to oversee project for new Murcia airport

Construction of the Murcia International Airport in Corvera is expected to start in the first quarter of 2008. The director of El Altet Airport in Alicante is set to leave his job on the Costa Blanca shortly for a move to the Murcia Region, where he will be in charge of coordinating the construction project for the new Murcia International Airport in Corvera.

The project must be presented to the Development Minister by this November, according to a report in La Opinión de Murcia on Tuesday. Before moving to El Altet, Mariano Menor, who was born in Yecla in Murcia, has previously been director of other AENA airports in Palma de Mallorca, Málaga and Gran Canaria.

The contract to build and manage the Corvera Airport was officially awarded to the Aeromur consortium at the end of July, who estimate that it could be operational in three years’ time.
Initial passenger capacity in its first year of operation is expected to reach 1.5 million.Typically Spanish September 12, 2007

New Murcia airport to compete with Alicante

THE PROJECT to build Murcia’s future Corvera Airport has been adapted to allow for a much bigger and wider runway and thus compete with El Altet.

Under the changes the runway will be increased in size to 3,000 metres long and 45 metres wide to allow it to take the world’s largest passenger and transport aircraft such as the Airbus-380 and the Russian Antonov-154.

Other aspects of the airport project, which will get underway during the second quarter of 2008, include a 22,500-square-metre three storey main terminal with nine telescopic arms giving direct access to aircraft with the capacity to handle three million passengers a year.

It will be built over a 306 hectare area between Corvera and Valladolises, alongside the Murcia-Cartagena highway.

JUST BUSINESS

The promoters behind the 265-million-euro project intend to take over a million Murcia-based passengers away from El Altet.

Its proximity to the southern Costa Blanca, especially the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, will appeal to residents in the area.

If everything goes to schedule, Corvera Airport will open its doors for business sometime during 2010 to coincide with the opening of Alicante Airport’s new passenger terminal.

In order for the airport to become successful it will have to attract low-cost airlines many of which many have set up bases in Alicante and the small San Javier airport off La Manga.Costa Blanca News

Some updated information regarding the new airtport at Corvera, from Dec through to the latest news from the 21st Feb.

Airport, One Step Closer:  (December 20, 2007)

The opening of the new international airport in Corvera is now one step closer after the project was formally registered with the Ministry for Development, by the Murcian government’s General Secretary for Public Works, José María Bernabé.

If the project manages to pass through the lengthy planning process without too many delays the first plane should take off from the runway in 2010. Aeromur S.A won the construction contract and the rights to manage the airport for forty years.

The new airport is expected to take two years to build and Aeromur S.A is expecting to start building some time from January to April 2008. The new airport will have an initial annual operating capacity of 1.5 million passengers, increasing to 5.2 million in 2015 and then, in a second phase of construction, rising to 8.7 million.

The Murcian government says the construction phase will provide 20,000 jobs and 1,300 jobs once the airport opens. Recruitment of workers is already underway with priority being given to applicants who live in the surrounding towns and villages.(The Costa Calider Informer).

New Murcia international airport presented at FITUR  (January 31, 2008)

The privately-run airport in Corvera could be operational in 2010

José Ballesteros, Murcia’s regional councillor for public works, housing and transport, is at the Fitur international tourism fair in Madrid, where he has arranged a number of meetings with tour operators and international airlines to discuss the new Murcia International Airport in Corvera. The companies include Ryanair, Vueling, Air Europa, Air France, Iberia and TUI, amongst others.

La Opinión de Murcia said the councillor is hopeful that Corvera, as a private airport, will be able to offer lower tariffs and greater flexibility than the airlines receive at state-managed Aena airports.

The airport has its own stand at Fitur, next to the Murcia stand.

The construction and 40 year management concession for the new airport has gone to Aeromur S.A., who are reported to be starting the two-year construction project this year. Initial operating capacity has been announced as 1.5 million passengers, increasing to 5.2 million in 2015.(Typically Spanish)
Road access to new Murcia International Airport designed for 3 million vehicles a year  (February 21, 2008)

There will be three access roads, two from the North and one from the South

José Ballesta, Murcia’s regional councillor for public works, housing and transport, gave details at a press conference on Thursday of the road access planned for the new international airport at Corvera. They have been designed in line with a projected traffic volume of almost 18,500 vehicles a day and 3 million a year.

Two of the three are planned from the A-30, and the Murcia government is awaiting authorisation from the Development Ministry, after which work on the northern access is expected to start this October, with a completion period of 10 months. Southern access will be from the MU-601 from Fuente Álamo to Valladolises.

The councillor also gave some details of the airport itself: a 45 metre-wide 3 kilometre runway, with capacity to take 15,000 aircraft movements a year. The airport is designed with an initial annual operating capacity of 1.5 million passengers.(Typically Spanish)

Hi, We moved here at the end of January, and among many of our applications for jobs, the airport was one of the first. My husband was lucky enought to be granted an interview with Jet2. However at the end of the 2 hour interview, he along with another guy, were told they could leave as they didn't speak Spanish! They were both very disappointed - why didn't they ask that question beforw inviting them for the interview. As a general rule, its very difficult to get legal work unless you can speak the lingo! Good luck

DebbieG,

Thanx for reply, so sorry hubby did not manage to get in. Is he still trying!!.

Have tried with Jet2 on a couple of occassions, through the applications route, but cannot seem to get my foot in the door. Now am trying directly with the airport itself. If you need address, come back to me.

Cheers, Paulnlyn.

Have just returned from Mar Menor with the local Costa Calida Informer free paper front page of which says " A.E.N.A. Spanish airports authority is investing Euros 49 mill in San Javier which includes a new 9000 sq m terminal, expansion of parking and new access roads."

It goes on to say that this may be taken by some with a pinch of salt as 2 years ago new runway and control tower were built but still not in use.
A E N A say that a change in European law re fuel storage meant delays to these projects and the tower and runway are hoped to be in use by Oct 2008.
One runway will then be excusively used by civilian flights and will substantially increase number of flights into the area.

Good news for owners in that region especially as Corvera will be a further bonus, the paper however states that that will be open within 5 years.

The following was reported in La Verdad Newspaper last Thursday on Corvera Airport .

Article in Friday 4th July issue of Informacion which says the first stone was laid 3rd July for the new Airport in Murcia between Corvera and Fuente Alamo . It is hoped to commence flights in 2010. Charges to airlines will be 20% cheaper than El Altet -

http://www.diarioinformacion.com/secciones/noticia.jsp?pRef=2008070400_12_773429__ALICANTE-Competencia-para-Altet

The airport is 16 kms south of Murcia and 25 kms north of Cartagena, between Corvera, Los Martinez del Puerto and Valladolises.

It says it will have easy access from south of Alicante to the east of Almeria.

When we were talking to someone at Murcia (San Javier) airport recently they said Easyjet were going to be using both San Javier AND the new airport but that could be porkies, who knows ?

Certainly Murcia airport has been hugely extended recently so some budget airlines surely will be using it else why would it have been extended ?

Yes when we got stopped at Alicante Airport trying to get us to have a easyjet card,  he said we should look at flying from Luton to Murcia  that it would be a shorter journey for us. I did not agree with him.  But have not seen it  advertisied unless I am missing something.     Unless it is something to come at some point.    Pat

I see no mail on this one for a few weeks.  Whatever the press may occasionally report, I see no sgns of progress on this.  On my first visit in 2005 I was told it was to open in 2006.  I have since been told a year later each year, and now it's 2010.
I have visited the site each year, and have yet to see any progress at all, not even a sign.  My last visit was 16 August 2008.
To build an airport of this scale will take several years and I cannot expect, with the overall property market and European economy as it is just now, that the successful bidder will contemplate starting to build for some considerable time

This new airport might well be a white elephant if the budjet airlines keep reducing their number of flights and in some cases collapsing!

Hi nbd1965

Sorry, might be being a bit thick here, but the thread says "New Murcia Airport"
I thought a new airport was being built at Corvera?

That is inland from Murcia which is virtually on the beach.
So nothing to do with Murcia Airport...........

This new airport at Corvera is due to open in 2009, see this link:
http://www.typicallyspanish.com/news/publish/article_3476.shtml

I hope this helps answer your question.
Kind regards,
