From the ECB:

Dear Mr. Scout,

Thank you for your e-mail of 26 January as regards the "Y" country code next to the serial number on euro banknotes.

For your information irrespective of the county code, euro banknotes are legal tender in all euro-area countries.

Any suggestion that euro banknotes with certain country codes next to the serial numbers could become invalid is false information.

Furthermore it might be of interest for you to know that euro banknotes are not issued by themember state whose country code is printed on the banknote. It is the national central banks of the euro area countries, together with the European Central Bank, who are responsible for issuing euro banknotes.

For further details you might like to consult the following links:

We hope this clarification is helpful.

Best regards,

Regina Karoline Schuller
Head of Press and Information Division

Well done Scout,But who believes that publicity people tell the truth?

(Only joking but am I?).The next question to keep this rubbish running is.....If the first letter denotes a Country of Origin, but doesnt mean anything,Why did they give each country a note of origin and not just give another number which was not tied into a particular Country

It gets more confusing when told they are in alphabetical order of Country names,But they use the Greek and I think Latin alphabet,Even Great Britain has a letter at the moment.

Seems a lot of hassle for something that doesnt mean anything. But it gives us all a chance to pass away a cold day indoors, talking a load of rubbish to each other.

Naaa.  As the lovely Mandy would have said "she would say that wouldn't she".

Why ask Frau Regina Karoline Schuller, when her reply was never going to be a surprise.  Her script was probably written by Frau Merkel.  She who has adopted a King Canute style role in insisting that the Euro will survive in it's current form, although there may be a little self interest along the way.

Also the wording of the missive from Frau Schuller is also erroneous.  It was not suggested that Euro notes from certain countries would become "invalid" just that the situation may be reached when their values might differ.  What she has said is of modest value.

I have no political allegiance, but as a Brit on matters of Europe I have an increasing respect for UKIP.  Of course they have an opposing agenda, but their revelations on the EU gravy train and absence of transparency and democracy is of serious value and Nigel Farage does have a good sense of humour and provides a crystal clear delivery.
