In order to register your car you will need an NIE, but I don't see why you would need to sign on the padron - not that there's any harm in doing so, of course. Perhaps you will need something as proof of address - that might be why you were told you need the padron certificate.
Don't know what or who personl car shopper is but am guessing it's a service someone has dreamt up to help ex-pats buy a car? Not wanting to sound too cynical, but would you use a service like that in the UK? If you are going to buy brand new, wouldn't you just go to the main dealers yourself? The only main difference here is that the price on the screen is pretty much the price you'll pay - no big discounts, although it can pay to shop around a bit, in case one dealer has some stock it wants to shift, for example. I imagine between Almeria and Murcia you will find all the major marques, and I'd be surprised if they don't have someone who you can deal with in English.

I think the Padron requirement is indeed to do with proof of address as you can't register a car without one and a postbox won't do - our cars are registered at our home address which has no mail delivery and they won't accept our postbox as a mailing address. Same applies to driving licences, incidentally. This ruling baffles me completely in a country where a large percentage of the population relies on a post box address as it would be a problem if you get a speeding ticket you didn't know about!
Anyway back to your question about the personal car shopper: there are main dealers for practically every marque here in the Vera area and in most cases there is someone who speaks good English - they have to because such a large proportion of their sales come from foreigners. Opel, Kia, Fiat, Seat, VW, Skoda, Nissan all have main dealerships on the outskirts of Vera. Peugeot has a small one in the town as does Ford.
If you are renting your contract with your landlord may serve as proof of address. Don't know if would need to be notarised for that purpose. Anyway as Roberto says, it is good to be registered on the Padron - the local authroities get money from central government based on the Padron.

Even if you know no Spanish, it's not too difficult to look at any of the major manufacturer's websites, and if you know the model & spec etc. you're after, to get the list price. Main dealers here rarely offer substantial discounts on this. If you have any difficulty finding it, post the make/model etc. here, and I'll try to price it for you.

Fiat Punto 1.2 Classic 8v 60CV (petrol) 5 door. Standard equip includes air con, ABS, central locking and radio/CD. €9710 incl IVA (VAT).
Exact models available often differ between UK and Spain. At the moment "Classic" appears to be the only model available. I think the Punto is being phased out in favour of the new Grande Punto.

I went into a Mazda dealer in Malaga a few years ago while shopping around for a new car. The (anti)salesman convinced me I shouldn't buy a Mazda, because according to him, parts are difficult to obtain in Spain since Mazda is not a popular make here!! I took his advice and bought a Ford from the garage next door

One thing to be aware of when selecting maker is that although Kia prices represent seriously good value, they will offer you a derisory sum should you come to trade it in. i know you have not mentioned Kia, but just in case.

Good point, but then again, the depreciation on any new car once it hits the road is almost as high as that of Spanish property!

Very true, but we have friends who were offered 40% less by Kia for a trade-in than they got from Hyundai! The car being traded in was a Nissan so wasn't to do with not being their own brand. I don't truthfully know what they do when you trade Kia for Kia but I suspect it must be similar or they couldn't afford to sell at such ridiculously low prices. It wouldn't matter too much of course if you intended to keep it till it fell apart.

Hi, I'm new in the forum, so first of all congratulations for the site and hello to everybody.
I found the website on an internet search trying to find some information about selling a Spanish car abroad.
As you may have realised already I'm Spanish myself so sorry for any grammatical or orthographic mistake while writing.
My flatmate is selling her Spanish registered car. She moved to the UK 4 years ago with her Spanish car and now that she has decided to live permanently in the UK she is going to get a British car and sell her car.
The car is a Daewoo Lanos 1.6 from 1998. It has valid ITV until September 2009 and we could help you and explain you what you need to do to change the owner details.
We live in Angus, Scotland at the moment and she uses the car daily for work. Her insurance is due in August and she would like to sell the car before the insurance gets renewed. If she does not manage to sell the car before August then she will keep the car for another year and next year make the decision of driving again to Spain to pass the ITV and sell the car in Spain.
If anyone is interested on a car just contact me by private message and I can tell you few more details of the car. The price for the car is £850. Second hand car market in Spain is quite expensive and she probably will get more money for the car selling the car in Spain but that will add the hazard of driving the car back to Spain and all the cost that involves.
I just thought that maybe someone would like to purchase a Spanish car in the UK for your holiday home in Spain or because you are moving to Spain but maybe not sure if permanently and need a cheap car for a while.

Just posted this in Classifieds but thought I'd post it here as well:
If anyone is interested I have a BMW 320 Coupe Automatic for sale. First registered in Germany in October 1999 imported to the UK and registered on UK plates by myself, the car is now situated on the Costa Del Sol. Finished in beautiful Topaz Blue with Light Grey Leather and Myrtle Wood Trim. Steptronic automatic gearbox (can be used as a manual), The car has covered genuine 44000 Kms that is just 27500 miles! with BMW Service History. This car is fully loaded with Xenon Headlamps, Electric Windows Front and Rear, Electric Heated Seats, Climate Control, 18' MV Spoke Alloys, Multifunction Steering Wheel with Cruise Control, Front Armrest, Multiple Airbags, Rear Park Sensors, Chrome Line Exterior, CD Player with IPOD interface and Bluetooth Handsfree for your mobile phone. The condition of the car is a credit to the last elderly owner in Germany (aged 70 odd!) the car is guaranteed accident free and in totally original condition and is in as new condition, possibly the best example you will find. Please PM me if you are interested and need more. Hopefully I will have a few photos of the car in the next few days which I can email to anyone interested in the car. Oh yes almost forgot it is fully road legal with MOT and Tax till March 2009.

He may have been lucky or he may have had a current Spanish MOT (ITV) if it was old enough to require one, and have paid his annual Spanish equivalent of road fund tax, in which case it would be hard for them to prove he had had it in UK for longer than 6 months, without going through the process of checking on his ferry movements which they probably don't consider worth their while, especially as he is not British.
It is the same here in Spain - if you have a UK reg car here more than 6 months it should be re-registered, but if it is less than 3 years old or has a current MOT and is taxed in UK they would never bother to try to prove you have had it for longer. Cars without valid MOTs from their country of registration cannot be taxed and without tax your insurance, even if you have paid for it, is not valid. Not a route to even be considered - you can be sued for everything you own in the event of an accident. You may have noticed that many quite elderly right hand drive cars are appearing on the Spanish roads with relatively new Spanish registration numbers - this is because people are at last heeding the warnings and getting their UK cars registered.

I heard on the radio today that the insurance company of the driver of the car that caused the tragic coach crash in Benalmadena recently, has agreed to pay out 1.4 million euros to the vicitims families. Imagine, if he had been driving a foreign registered car, with no valid MoT or tax? As Jane points out, it makes no difference that you have paid for your insurance - no MoT or tax = no insurance. The possible consequences do not bear thinking about.

Your right, he did have a brand new car and paid all necessary costs associated, like road tax etc.
