I take full responsibility for leaving my wallet at the check out for a few seconds while  i packed food, left it on plastic counter where one would have once placed a cheque book to write checks and bham gone in seconds.  It was 3.20 am middle of night and hardly anyone around!  But it was my own stupid fault that i had to spend most of the next day informing banks  etc and travel pass peeps and loads more.  So sure about my messenger bag always on me and then i do a dumb thing like that, you couldn't make this up could you lol.

As others have said, pickpockets are everywhere not just in Spain. I am contently asking my wife to zip up her hand bag and carry it in a different way especially in crowds. I still live in the UK but now carry my cards separately from my  cash so if I do fall foul of a pickpocket I will not lose everything .

My main point though is that I have been given advice to move my wallet to a different pocket by at least three Spanish market holders, they do care!

These things occur when we are distracted or relaxed which is what my wife and I were when we were in Ikea in Murcia a man opened my wifes handbag which she put down to him brushing past and catching it with his hand, by the time she explained and I realised it was not an accident he was gone. But being inside a store like Ikea you do not expect pickpockets. Lesson learnt.

I understand from a Spanish friend that a store has a responsibly for their customers safety.   She said one should complete the complaints form. I have no idea whether a store would or would not be responsible for your loss, but I think for the sake of completing the form it would be worth a try.

I have, or a friend has asked for the form several times over the 25 years I have lived here. On each occasion the store/shop/ and even the National police on 4 occasions have put things right there and then. Lidle took a little longer but they did make the refund, which was ‘not possible’ before I used the form.   Likewise Repsol who were not calling each week with gas, undertook to ensure they visited my house every week  after I made out the form , and they did, even to extent of stopping outside my house and sounding the horn until I acknowledged.

I know some here (who have probably never used the form)  like to say it does not work but as I say, in my experience, it always has.
