Hi all,
We've been getting loads of conflicting opinions on whether the supply of electric we are currenty on is better than the supply we could be getting.
I think we are still on some sort of builders supply - anlthough the bills are coming directly to us in our names (I think that would be the case as technically we are the constuctors as we are employing a builder to build the house on our behalf rather than buying a finished product from the builder.
Our electric bill seems pretty cheap - averaging out at € 167 per month (it's a big house with pool etc), but i want to see if we can't get a better deal. We;re still in the process of getting the certificate of habitation licence, which I think we'll need in order to go back to Iberdrola and get the full suite of tarriffs from them, but I'd like to compare exactly what those tarrifs are and what we're on now to see if it's worth switching. We're currnently on the Ibderola "Generacion" tarriff.
Regards, Carl

Hi Carl,
You can give Iberdrola a call and they will email you their tariffs. ( Yes, they speak English)
The telephone number is on your bill.
The best deal at the moment is their Night and Day rate. It has saved me a lot of money and I wrote about it in my blog post how to save money in Spain.
Take care
Annie

Hi all, ok I'm trying to understand if i have the best tariff for my elec bill.
It looks as though we don't have a day and night rate. In the summer we might have the aircon on overnight (on economy seeting). I would say the vast majority of elec is used in the day time, and wondered if others in a similar boat are paying the same rate per kwh - or less.
I've looked at the Iberdrola site, but wanted to ask others what they do?
Below I've listed the last charge that came in this week.
Regards, Carl
Energia
Potencia Contratada 2.3 kw x 63 dias x 0.068274 €/ kw dia € 9.89
Energia Consumida 2.168 kwh x 0.164461 €.kwh € 356.55
Descuento Sobre T. Potenica 10% s/9.89€ € 0.99
Impuesto Sobre Electricidad 4.864% s/365.45 € x 1.05113 € 18.68
Servicios
Alquiler Equipos de Medida 2 meses x 0.81 €/mes € 1.62

Here is our latest bill, admittedly we were hardly there for the period, But if I were you I would focus on consumption not rates. Use gas fires for heating not electric, put water heaters on timed. Switch to LED bulbs etc. You can view yoru consumption per month over the year. Day night is fine if you don't use electric much during the day.
ENERGÍA
Potencia contratada 5,75 kW x 48 días x 0,063193 /kW día 17,44
5,75 kW x 17 días x 0,065203 /kW día 6,37
Energía consumida 83 kWh x 0,156005 /kWh 12,95
73 kWh x 0,160529 /kWh 11,72
Impuesto sobre electricidad 4,864% s/48,48 x 1,05113 2,48
TOTAL ENERGÍA 50,96

Thanks Juan, actually I'm not really interetd in consumption, more in the rate you are paying versus what we are paying. Ours is big house and we are there all year around, and therefore of course our consumption would always be higher.

And if I were you, carl, I'd pop along to Iberdrola and get it checked out. You are only contracted for 2.3 Kw which is nowhere near the amount of power required.
Plus, you've used 2,168 Kwh in 2 months? That's some power you're consuming.
Like juan, we are contracted for 5.75Kw. We have everything electric including heating, water, cooking and so on. We use the oven regularly, a washing machine, a dishwasher, a plasma TV and the aircon for heating. Our bill for the two months came to €168 in total which we thought was high and we are not on the dual tariff.
Definitely something wrong if you are consuming that much with such a low power input which is barely sufficient to run an electric oven. To put it into perspective, that's like running a 2kw bar heater for 20 hours a day every day for 2 months. Or having an electric kettle boiling away 24 hours a day for 3 months.

Thanks Bobaol, as mentioend it's a large house, with a pool etc and we're running the aircon for heating in the winter.
I would think that having a lower contractd power supply is a good thing as our standng charge would have been much lower than if we had a higher allowance.
I'm not even sure if we're still techincally on the builders supply. We get the bills in out name, but we were techincally the contrcutor as we had the new house built with a builder of our choice on our existing land.
We dont have any more of a problem with the power tripping than anyone else so I'm very reluctant to ask for more capacity for the reason mentioned above - nonetheless, I'm keen to see if we are using as much as they say we are.

According to my induction cooker instructions, 3 hobs on takes between 2.3 and 3.2kw. That's as much as your entire power supply. Imagine having a cooker or kettle going at the same time let alone a pool pump or aircon. That's why I said get Iberdrola to check it out. Even if your supply was doubled you'd still only have a bill of less than 20euros for the 2 months which is pennies compared to the amount the bill says you're using. Maybe your builder is using the power for something else. Check out the fuse fitted in your fuse box. If there isn't one, it's not been done by Iberdrola. If there is one it should be 10A on the power you are contracted for. A normal, domestic supply should have a 25A fuse to give 5.75kw.

We're contracted for 9.2kw, and we draw quite a lot of power, as we are all electric. My last bill for December was about €217 and we are on dual tariff. I have been in this tariff for about 4 years, and with some initial management, I can say that the average consumption is about 35% on the day tariff and 65% on the night, perhaps a tiny variance in the winter. It's quite difficult to compare people s bills, because it depends on various factors, such as house size, time spent at home etc. We have a villa with a very high ceiling, and open plan living area. During the winter my wife doesn't like to be cold, so we maintain the living area at around 21c all day, and the bedrooms at 20c. We do this using aircon and radiators. I leave them on when we go out, when its cold like now. We rarely trip, possibly twice in 6 years. We tripped the other day in the morning, when we had, 2 aircon units, 2 bedroom aviators, 2 bathroom heaters, water heater and kettle running, and my wife switched on wall heater in the I would also say you need to check your tariff. The standard price on the TUR (Tariff of Last Resort) is €0.150938. The time tariff is €0.183228 during the day and €0.063770 at night. Just done a quick calculation, and at the current rates, the break even point is 73%/27%. so if 27% of your units are used between 10pm and 12pm, the cost is more or less the same on either tariff. As I said before mine is generally 35%/65%. We don't skimp (I am a heavy user) I just manage it and try and use heavy use items in the cheaper period. so for example, we only use the washer, dryer and dishwasher during this period. In addition I have the water heater on a digital plug in time switch, so it only comes on at 5am for a couple of hours, and then again at 10am after the morning showers to heat up for the rest of the day. We always have constant hot water. I try and run the pool pump in the cheaper hours, but in the summer i run it half and half as it runs for 8 hours a day.. Other than that, we just use it as normal.

That's a good site, but it's only really useful if you're contacted ro need over 10kw. Below this, you're generally better off on the TUR, where the price is controlled by the Government. In this case there isn't really any difference between the companies.
