Now that is odd the round blue stamp on all five of our NIE certificates says quite clearly "SUBDELEGACION DEL GOBIERNO EN HUELVA" in the outer circle and "OFICINA DE EXTRANJEROS on the inner circle both scored through with a signiture. They have all been accepted by the notario on several occasions.

Pinetree, you said when you and your partner first applied for your NIE numbers it was done through a gestor. Can you not get in touch with that same gestor now, to ask for your NIE number? Surely they would have a record of it? May save a bit of time & hassle when requesting certificates if you already have your NIE.

Hllo Roberto,
Yes we will probably try as it is something I have already asked, as we were relying on our agent to help, as her son was the person who originally set up the numbers for us at the time he was employed by a company who sold us land with no permissions granted.(that's another story)
Anyway It was a very quick process we walked into some building (hopefully I will remember where it is) and all I can recall was him conversing in spanish, we handed over our passports to be copied and paid some money .We did not even give our address so do not know where they were issued too.Its a question I would ask next time.
Its amazing what can get done quickly , where there is money to be made!
They have both been involved with our new purchase that we are suppose to be signing for next month, but they said they could not do anything as they are confused to why we have to re-apply, and its down to us basically to sort it out,(emm more of our work is done, not interested.)
What I think is happened as it was mentioned before by NIE DIRECT the numbers never got submitted properly so they are out there somewhere but not processed. Our solicitor has a record of my partners number but we have never been given paperwork to identify against the numbers.
My advise would be to people purchasing now, is take time- ask LOTS of questions dont let others push you into a world wind of confusion.and don't hand over money not even a deposit or sign anything until your totally convinced and have it certified legally that all is okay to go ahead, you can end up loosing money that your never see again i.e. the tax solicitors fees , I feel we are all very vunerable for reasons that (1.we do not understand the legal system (if there's one ) and (2 the language barrier, lets face it even if you are learning spanish, its never words to do with the buying process.(see my other post in forum LFO OR FLO )

RE: JohnKath regarding the stamps... I have now double-checked and see that each branch of the National Police in fact DO have different stamps on them which relate to the local branch itself. Therefore I am sure that your blue stamps are fine.
RE: pinetree's comments, I cannot agree more that it is of paramount importance to ask the questions and be certain to be completely clear before going ahead. Our firm specialises in property conveyancing services, (providing English-speaking assistance) which is unfortunately a rarity here in Spain at the moment.
When purchasing or selling property in Spain, I cannot possibly recommend strongly enough that you consult an independent lawyer (best not to simply go with the law firm recommended by the estate agent / developer as there is a chance they might not have your best interest at mind). The horror stories that I have heard (and seen) for individuals that didn't are far too devastating and shockingly frequent to flirt with.

....I know this has been discussed loads of times but responses seem to be conflicting so here goes:
I urgently need an NIE.
I've completed the form but my questions are:
1. Do you need photos?
2. Do I have to have a letter to say why I need an NIE and if so, who do I get it from? I'm not buying a car or house, I do not have employment.... (it seems that some people say you do need one, some say you don't). I have no-one who could write me a letter, would a rental contract in Spanish be enough?
3. What are the opening times of the Foreigner's Dept at the Policia Nacional in Estepona?
Think that's it...please help. I need to get it on Monday morning.
Thank you!!!

We went to the London Consulate for 2 POA and they were open 9am till 2pm and the pair cost us just €35 + IVA.
We had to pay in cash in euro.
I dont think it will be much but in Spain it is about €15 paid at the bank before you can collect the NIE so I would have about €50 with you just in case. This message was last edited by JohnKath on 7/1/2008.

Just so people are aware of the current speed of getting NIE numbers -I applied to Manchester consul on May 6th and received it on August 27th - nearly four months ( despite estimate of 2-3 months) !!! When it did not arrive I had to write to the Police station in Madrid to chase it up, and it still took a month from then even with the help of the consul. I realise that people are on holiday in August, but please be aware of the time it could take to get it this way.

It must also depend on where you apply. In preparation for my coming to Spain in August, I came over for four days to Antequera in April. In that time I was able to apply for and receive my N.I.E. overnight, applied for and received my social security number immediately and opened a bank account just using my hotel as the address. I have been able to change the hotel address now to my new residence. This was done at the National Police in Estepona and received my residency in five hours. My experience is if you're willing to wait in a queue it's not a problem.

My husband just went to Spanish consulate in Manchester on Friday and got it sorted. He filled in the form that you can get from internet and gave evidence, in this case, he will be working in Spain. He did not pay a penny and he will have the number in 2 or 3 months. If you want further information send me a PM

You need to ask in the National Police office nearest to the location of the apartment. They will drive you to the right place.
A spanish speaking friend may suffice for you to obtain the NIE. In my opinion there is no need of lawyer or gestor to do this. Following the official instructions is actually quite simple.

We applied in the Spanish Embassy in London - really straightforward, painless process.
HOWEVER, took Madrid 6 months to confirm they had lost all the paperwork and we have now given our solicitor Power of Attorney and they are going to apply on our behalf.
Wouldn't be so bad if the property we need it for we had any chance of completing on - throwing good money after bad methinks!!! Oh well - hopefully after we get our NIE, and the Bank guarantee turns up, the developer will go bust and we'll get our deposit back!!!
Good luck everyone

The NIE application appears to be a minefield. We found a very friendly chap in the Murcia region who accompanied us to the Murcia NIE office for €85 plus the costs (€15.70). Apparently, local knowledge is helpful as each NIE office has different procedures, some you need duplicate application forms, some you need photos and for some you need copy of the contract and some places you need to make appointments. This guy has contacts in Almeria and Costa del Sol as well as Murcia and therefore is the answer to all our prayers and we have recommended him to other friends!! We now happily have our nie certificates and just now need to find the shortfall of thousands to complete our purchase !!!! Que sera sera !
try him....he´s on a an email address at hotmail, called easynie !

My husband applied for it 6 weeks ago through the Spanish Consulate in Manchester. It was free apart from the cost of the train ticket from Newcastle to Manchester. He's just received it right before we move to Spain to work. Well, he will be working I still need to look for a job. However, I have my ID and social security nos sorted as I am Spanish.

The last time I wnt with someone to get their NIE we walked into the Police Commission and out again with his NIE in about half an hour. But then that's Jaen - not many many foreigners wanting NIE's there.
Of course somebody must speak Spanish - that's why I was there.
