Banking in Spain
The Comments |
Hi everyone,
Just want to put the question out there - does anyone know of a reputable bank in Spain that doesn't have enormous annual charges?? We used to bank with the sister bank of Halifax going back many years and didn't incur any charges, we were transferred to Sabadell some years ago and their charges are high, any recommendations would be gratefully accepted! Does anybody know if Santander are any better/cheaper??
Many thanks

There was a thread about using Starling as a bank because it offers a euro account, but the problems of IBAN discrimination, not sure if it was ever resolved or not? There were some other ideas about ways to bank and pay direct debits on there, but things seem to have gone quiet in that area now. Would be interesting to see how things have turned out for the people that were trying alternatives.

Wise (was Transferwise) every time for me. Just added a direct debit to pay French toll charges from my Euro account with them. Bank charges are only going one way in Spain - Up! My account there is now closed. Wise is free.

I opened a Wise account Juan, purely to send money across after the rates from my previous provider decreased quite a bit, but I do remember you saying about it before. Can you get a Spanish IBAN now? I seem to recall that a majority of direct debits were okay, but official ones (council, utility, etc) wouldn't recognise anything with a non Spanish IBAN.

It's a Belgian IBAN. All utilities (water, electricty) fine, also community fees. I pay car and council tax online as I have a digital ID.
Cheers
