Hi,  we are trying to retire to Spain but it is so much more difficult now, can anyone recommend an English Solicitor (prefereably one they have used) who deals with this in either Essex or London please.

For what my advice is worth, don't use a British Solicitor to retire to Spain based in either Essex or London, or anywhere else in England for that matter.

Ask the Solicitor who posts on here, based in Spain, know the language, know the ways of any new laws regarding what you want to do, their is no way on this earth that any British person can know the pitfalls if they have not been born and brought up in a country, they will tell you they can, they cannot.

As I said do your self a favour and ask the Solictor that posts on here, hope this helps in some way.

Hello Amanda

There is nothing magical a solicitor can do that you cannot do yourself.

All you need to do: - U.K. nationals not currently living in Spain must apply for a residency permit. Documents you must provide when applying for residency include your foreigner's tax number, proof of income (As of 2021, the minimum figure for this is currently set at €2,259 per month or just over €27,000 per calendar year. You'll also need evidence of having an additional €6,778 for each additional family member), proof of Spanish health insurance, proof you have paid an application fee, a residency form, your passport, and two passport-sized photographs. You must first apply for temporary residency, and then can apply for permanent residency after five years.

All the information you need can be found on UK & Spain government websites.

A UK solicitor is highly unlikely to have much practical experience and will not have the necessary contacts with the local Town Hall. You are far better off with a local solictor.

Part of the process is an interview and form filling with the Toen Hall.  It's all straight forward, but the solicitor will ensure you are properly prepared with the right documents etc.

Why make life difficult for yourself?   The fee should be very modest...
