Yes Justin, that's the way to go.
Just go and see the school.
When we made the decision to move here we went to look at the local school. Our son was 7 at the time. We didn't have much Spanish then, so asked a friend to help us.
As it turned out the friend could not be at the school at the appointed time (some problem with the car as I remember!) No problem. The school pulled an English kid out
of class to translate for us. This was in the Easter of the year before we intended to move. (we moved in the summer of the following year)
What gob-smacked us was that there was NO PROBLEM with our son joining the school.
The headmaster told us that if the class goes over 25 children, the class is split in half. Our son is in a class of 16 with a sister class of 15. (where in the UK do you find that?)
The headmaster asked us when we wanted our son to start, Monday? Baring in mind we weren't moving till the next summer, he was a little confused! Our son could have started
straight away. The school was happy to wait for NIE's etc.
It's not the same as the UK here. If you live in the area, your child will go to the local school. (BTW, we are in Catalunya) We do however pay for his books and sundries.(This year
about 120 euros) A small price to pay for having my child in a class of 16 kids!
Just go the the school.
Take care.
Fiona.
