You guys will know the answer to this I'm sure.......when I was in Spain last month I had a moment of panic as I thought I'd forgotten to pack my inhaler (I hadn't, it was on the floor under the bed!) But, if I had forgotten it, would I have been able to go to a chemists and just buy one or would I have had to make a doctor's appointment and get a prescription for one?
I've never had to use a chemist in Spain as always have everything with me - but what's the difference between a Farmarcia and a Pharmarcia?

Cioffi, there was a lady who went out to view properties with Atlas & she was in the next room to us & she'd forgotton her heart tablets, Digoxin, & was able to purchase these over the counter. Also I bought Diclofenac anti inflammatories this recent trip when my back was crippling me. I could get hold of blood pressure medications too, had I run out.

I lived in Athens for three years in my youth and could buy most items required over the counter but, luckily I suppose, have never been in this situation when in Spain. I knew that you would know!
Thanks Justin & More!
PS I had thought I might get a comment from you More, for posting in the CORRECT place.......not General Chit Chat - if we're given praise we'll do even better you know!!!!!This message was last edited by Cioffi1 on 5/4/2008.

You can buy Ventalin inhalers over the counter here for a fraction of the price you pay on perscription in the UK.

As well as pretty well any other medical stuff, Karen. We have friends and relatives who stock up here on all sorts of things and also ask us to take them to UK for them - even posting them you still save money!

I bought 40 Diclofenac anti inflammatories for only 2.60€ (£2 roughly) last month. Cheaper than on prescription, as I'm NOT 60 YET !

Whilst it is a good thing to be able to get medication over the counter, it is also dangerous!
I bought my super duper pain killers in Spain, Tramadol.
I mentioned this to my UK GP and he tut tutted!
He had stopped prescribing these for me as they contain an opiate and are addictive.
I was only supposed to have them leading up to my hip replacement.
I was in pain after tripping in Spain and jolting my back badly, so was desperate.............
However, if I did need to get them again, I would buy them in Spain!!!!

I think you're correct in what you say Fibby - both my parents were prescribed Tramadol for pain relief after they had major cancer surgeries - I took one when I was at their home as I had a major back pain and don't remember the rest of the day as I could hardly stay awake!

Yes, they are very strong Sharon.
They are very close in strength to Morphine.
I lived on them for 18 months, before my hip op, but am glad I do not need them so often now!!

I will be moving to my Spanish house in alfaix for the summer and then permanently after January. I take statins prescribed by my GP for cholesterol. Can they be obtained from a chemist in spain or only via the GP?

Hi Scampi
You can almost certainly get them over the counter but they are expensive without prescription - even on prescription they are quite dear although they have come down a lot recently.
The best plan would be to persuade your UK GP to give you enough to cover you while you are away on your short visit (and for the first couple of months of next year if possible) and then make sure you get your E106 (or 121 if you are over 60) from Newcastle as these will enable you to get a SPanish Social Security card and entitle you to prescriptions. I am not sure what they do about prescription charges if you are over 60 but under 65 as in theory you have to be 65 here to get them free.
There is quite a bit about the E106/121 on this site. However to avoid boring everyone else if you pm me I can give you all the gen on going to the Social Security to get registered.
Hope this is helpful
Jane

Hi,
Just out of interest can you buy antibiotics over the counter. I ask as I suffer from tonsillitis and so does my nearly 3 year old daughter. We are over again in 5 weeks so was just wondering. We are moving over later on this year.
Thanks a lot.
