hi again.
thankyou to those who have replied to me on my general questions before.
my next question is,,,,, my partner is a type1 diabetic, we are hoping to move to spain next year. does anyone know someone in spain who is diabetic? does my partner have to have health insurance to get his insulin? or does he become medical exempt for it, the same as in the uk? if we have to buy it, does it cost a lot? i have been told that medical insurance is very hard to get for someone with a long term illness? is that right and do you really need it? please HELP!!!! thankyou

You don't say if you will be working / paying social security, or if you are of retirement age and transferring your benefits to Spain. If neither of the above, private is the only option.

This post belongs to the following thread: where do we start????
hi,
we have finally decided to seriously look into moving to spain! we are from the south of england, myself, my partner and 4 children under the age of 7. this site has been very helpfull so far but where on earth do we start? money is quite a big issue, how much do we need to suppot our selves till jobs are sorted? schools are another thing, will they settle ok? so any one who could give us some idea of where to start, or anyone who has done the same as what we are planning. advse would be so much appreciated to put our minds at ease! thankyou.

Type 1 diabetes is a permanent (until new research proves otherwise) condition, and I am sure that you can get free treatment for this condition in Spain, whatever your age.
Call Newcastle and ask them what form you need (you will almost certainly need a certificate from your diabetic consultant as well), it may just be a version of an E 121.
I know someone with advanced Parkinson's who is getting excellent treatment here, but don't know any resident diabetics.
Insulin can usually be bought over the counter, if you buy from a local farmacia who know you, and it is not expensive. Take your British insulin in and they will look on the computer for the equivalent Spanish brand. However, you will still need your glucose, HbA1c etc. etc. monitoring so it is important to get registered with a GP / clinic.
I don't need to warn you to be careful when changing brands of insulin - just remember to keep the sugar to hand!
I'll ask around town and get back

I don't know if this will help but....if you are stuck and have to buy insulin in Spain, the cheapest in my farmacia is as follows:
5 pens each with 3ml insulin at 100IU/ml (or was it 3 pens with 5 ml???)
anyway, I reckon that comes to 5 x 3 x 100 = 1500 IU insulin
which comes to 38.85€
38.85 / 1500 = 2.59 centimos/IU (or 2.59€ per 100IU).
