Brian we always drive we have twin girls aged 14 so not to bad we usually stop for around 6 hours in the car at the service stations although you may not want to do that we also share the driving with the stop and from calais to torrevieja we can do it in around 24 hours this includes the 6 hour sleep for places to stay look here put in your departure from calais to wherever you are going to and it will give you details of the hotels on route ranging from basic to mid priced hotels the route most sat navs will take you is round paris on the boulevard peripherique if you do not want to do paris then go via reims and it will take you away from paris this route will take you along the edge of the pyreenees and to the millau bridge near montpellier. If you are going the ferry route once again place the departure point and arrival point in the site above and it will give you hotels on route the ferry route to alicante and south will take around 9 hours or so non stop.
we are driving down on the 24th October

We took the Plymouth to Santander ferry and then the toll road to Zaragoza, stayed over night at Teruel and then travelled down the coast road the next day. We drove about 6 hours each day, we limited it because of the pups and the jalopy we were travelling in. We found the toll roads so quiet that we could really get some miles done. If we hadn't had the pups we would have shared the driving and done it in one trip without an overnight stop.
Hope you have a good trip.
