The Wok Vera Playa Almeria- is it still open?

Read some stories that it was closed by police .....employing illegals!

Anyone know if it is still open.....great food and at 9.50 € goog value and they give you a bottle of wine when you leave!

Just another example of the value on Almeria and the reason I am going to winter there.........one day full time ! 

Yes, it had re-opened when we were at Chilli 2 a couple of weeks ago, according to signs on the windows it had closed while the Olympics were on , not sure if they had gone back to watch them, or take part. We also heard the rumour about the police closing them down but don't know whether there was any truth in it.

People were leaving, as usual, with a bottle of wine.

It was closed (not once but twice!) and we heard it was because of food hygiene issues.  We don't go there anymore and I agree that for the same thing the Vera one is much nicer, being smaller and with a much better atmosphere.  However for Chinese generally we find that the one nearly opposite Mercadona in Garrucha is better and the best is the one on Mojacar Playa more or less opposite the Mediterraneo restaurant (can never remember the name but it might be Imperial Palace).  It is not just Chinese but a bit of Japanese and Thai as well.  Bit more expensive but definitely worth the difference unless you are just looking to fill up cheaply and quite quickly.

Yes it was still busy as ever  October  and yes  the food  has always been fine so was surprised to hear about health issues---but that can happen anywhere can't it? At least we can see it being cooked

To me the ' acid test' is....how was it the next day!!!

Last October we took our yougest daughter and 3 grandchildren [by the way we have 8!!]....1X  6 ..2 x 41/2 with us ...they had a ball

Indeed there are RBB, and no more expensive than eating at the Wok if you go at lunchtime for a Menu del Día - some are even offering them in the evening now in order to drum up business. I really do urge you to try at least once - before 2pm or you won't get a seat in the best ones because they will be full of office and manual workers.

The price is usually under €10 and includes a drink (which I don't think the Wok does although they give you a bottle of their house wine to take away.  Given that you can buy a much better bottle for rather less than €2 not a big deal).  The menu is generally a bit predictable but well prepared and fresh.  Most include a good salad before a choice of starter, the main course is nearly always a selection of grilled meat or fish and some sort of stew, desserts are the usual Spanish choice of flan, arroz con leche, ice cream, fruit.

A really good one under new management in Antas is La Gloria, and also in Antas is Cocina Angela, which also has one of the best selection of tapas anywhere.  Both open in the evening and I think both do MDD in the evening - certainly Cocina Angela does. 

There are a couple which are a bit more expensive but well worth the extra:  the El Mar la Mar at Villaricos and Sur in Mojacar. EMLM is actually English (actually I thikn that might be Irish so don't quote me!) the menu is more international and EXCELLENT at €12.50 including half a bottle each of really good wine.  Sur is €12 or €12.50 and includes one glass of good wine.  You can't get MDD in the evening at either of these.

If you try them I can nearly guarantee (controversially - I have got my shield ready for the protests!) that you will find it a much better eating experience overall.... Better atmosphere particularly.  Not to say that we never go to the Wok (at least the one near Intermarché, not Vera Playa) but to be honest, whenever we do we wonder why we bothered - for us the only good reason for choosing it above the Spanish is that you can eat there before 8pm.

Try the Tennis Club at Huercal Overa

Last time it was 9.50 € and for two of us it included a bottle of water and a bottle of wine

Very traditional...one of the starters was rabbit soup and very nice it was 

But every so often a Chinise is nice!  

Agree RBB about Tenis Club and also that one is entitled to fancy a Chinese from time to time, especially if you live here all or most of the time.

Just feel that the Wok gets more air time than perhaps it deserves, given all the alternatives, and would like to feel that those who come for short visits are getting a proper Spanish experience, assuming that is why they are here.  The Spanish restaurant owners without exception will welcome children (the Spanish love children) and they will make it easy to feed them economically without feeling any embarrasment (little plates for them to share your food for the really small ones, two plates and one meal for the larger ones not yet up to eating a full adult meal etc).

In Huercal Overa we also adore the Bodega (Marquesina?) which is just on the left if you carry straight on at the huge bend before Ferreteria Tapia, rather than following the main road.  No full meals but FAB tapas and an aubergine thing topped with herby minced pork and bechamel sauce, a meal in itself at about €2.  Not always on display so you have to ask if they have any Berenjena.

I have written an extensive local restaurants guide covering the Mojacar, Vera, Turre etc area which I leave for renters and have passed on to a couple of members. New additions to the menu (change is as good as a rest!) and the take-away service is brilliant, although you don't get the bottle of wine!!
