Note from the editor: Visitors to the area could be forgiven for thinking that the sleepy village of Canabal in the province of Lugo, Galicia is a quiet rural backwater that time has forgotten. Look a little closer and you might be surprised.

High Speed Heaven Earlier in the week, Canabal welcomed the arrival of its first high speed train. Celebrations were short lived when residents found out that every seat had been pre-booked. An anonymous source was quoted as saying ‘I thought it would be longer than that’. It’s not clear whether José was referring to the length of the train or the time it took to cover the 8km from Monforte de Lemos.
Terry the Terrier Cautioned by Police Local resident, Terry the Terrier was earlier cautioned by police for knee slides on the grass. A police spokesperson said that just because Huddersfield Town FC had gained promotion to the English Premier League that didn’t give him the right to create skid marks in the grass. Terry’s response was ‘Bah humbug’. The officer concerned said he preferred turron: especially the chocolate one with the almond chips.
Frying in the Heat The recent heatwave has forced some local resident to take extreme measures to stay cool. As the mercury shot past forty degrees Celsius, tensions flared in the pig pen. Pepe Pig refused to share the community pool with his friends and comrades.
And finally, local centenarian, Pilar, hasn’t given up hope of entering next year’s Madrid marathon. ‘I train twice a day. An hour in the morning and another in the afternoon’, she said. Having last year broken her hip in a fall, she stands as an inspiration to us all.
