It is a very easy trip and takes about 1hr 40 mins.  The directions on my screen say:

N338 Murcia

A7/ E15 Murcia

A30/A7/E15 Cartagena

138 Alcantarilla

534 Vera

This takes you to the exit motorway junction at Vera. It's not very descriptive, but you could get a better view of the route on Google Maps.

We did this trip in May and it is really easy. We used the toll roads. I don't know what car Marksfish is driving ()but I would say it takes a bit longer than 1 hr 40. I don't drive slowly but don't know if I could do it in that time.

Edited to say "We did use the toll road but not too onerous - about 15 euros if memory serves."

We only had a 1 litre Aygo (never again) which was alright downhill but not very good otherwise. No toll roads the way we went and will be doing again on the 20th Dec in the middle of the night!! Seriously, it is only about that amount of time driving at the speed limit (most of the time ) as the roads are empty.

We have used that airport 5 times, each time in a different type of car and i can tell you it takes a lot longer than 1 hour 40.

I break the speed limit all the time and fastest we have managed is 2 hours 10 again late at night

I agree with Paul & Carol, we did it in October and it took just over 2 hrs.  However, if you come out of the airport and head west towards Murcia it is a very direct route, with no toll to pay (you do that on the route from Murcia airport).  On this route you just follow the route to Murcia and Almeria until you get to Vera.  The only place you have to be careful is as you approach Murcia, you must stay in the right hand lane as the road to Almeria goes off to the right and if you miss it you will find yourself in Murcia!

This is probably our preferred route as the choice of flights from Gatwick is far better and often cheaper than to Murcia or Almeria.  We are in and out of Alicante next July/August.

We always allow two hours and give or take a few minutes that is usually about right.
