Sol Melia Golf is born - a strong commitment from the company for this important segment
Palma de Mallorca, December 2007.- Golf is Sol Melia’ new challenge. The first big step towards the company’s growth in this important segment has been the creation of the Sol Meliá Golf department in Spain. Sol Melia Golf has been introduced in order to increase the offer for this sport at the hotels and destinations in the 35 countries in which the company operates its hotels.
This year 2007 has seen the beginning of the department's activities and the first major event organized has been the I Meliá Golf Circuit, which ended on the weekend of November (24- 25) and which was held at the Meliá Sancti Petri Hotel, in Cadiz, southern Spain. The Circuit began on the 28th September at Palomarejos Golf, in central Spain and was then continued at the most important golf courses in Alicante, Majorca, Gerona and Cadiz. Just like the Grand Final, the fourth test was also played at a course located at a Sol Meliá Hotel: the PGA Golf de Catalunya in Caldes de Malavella in Gerona, which is just beside the Meliá Golf Vichy Catalan.
In this first Circuit, more than 500 players participated, mainly representatives of major companies working with Sol Meliá. This first edition has been a great success and is already considered to be one of the main golf events in Spain. But this was only a first step and next year Sol Meliá Golf plans to expand the tournament and even celebrate the Grand Final in the Caribbean.
Sol Meliá Golf is also represented in the most important professional events of this sport, as shown by the attendance of the Head of Sol Meliá Golf, Carolina Donate, at the International Golf Travel Market, held in Cancun from the 3rd to the 6th December 2007.
Another important initiative taken by the company to boost this sport is the opening during 2008 and 2009 of several hotels with golf courses, or located in major golf destinations, such as the Meliá Aldeia dos Capuchos (Portugal), which will be opening its Golf Aldeia dos Capuchos (1370 m-PAR 29 with 2 departures) in April 2008; the Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora (Tenerife), which is due to open in 2008 and is close to three golf courses, and for 2010 another fantastic hotel is under construction, the Meliá Hacienda del Alamo (Murcia).
"Sol Melia Golf: great professionals for a great segment”.
