Whit woo !!!!! sorry smokers but it just kills me when you are sat in a smoky environment when you are a non smoker and I would like to live as long as I can - I am aiming to get a letter off the King for my 100th Birthday.........!! thanks to Jill and Terry for the below information
On June 22nd 2010 Spain will become a no smoking zone in all public enclosed spaces, to include, bars, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs and all public transport. Spain is behind the rest of Europe in imposing this ban, right now in Spain a venue or place of business can choose whether to allow smoking or not following the current legislation bought in to law in 2005 which allowed venues to simply display a warning sign on the door if the atmosphere is likely to be smoky, 90% of businesses chose this option and carried on with business as usual, but on June 22nd the new law will be introduced and you will no longer be able to smoke in any public area. This law change has been fought by most cafes and bars that do not welcome the change and feel that the new law will have a big impact on their business, but in the end the health minister has won. Congress still must approve this but it looks like that will have the approval of all parties. Mark your diary smokers and remember to stub out before you enter the bar this summer.

Brilliant.
I was disappointed last time over at Condado in February when the Spanish party on the table behind us in the Polaris restaurant was 'puffing away' while we were eating. Can't come a minute too soon for me. After all, it isn't really a hardship taking a fag outside in the Spanish climate is it ?
Regards,

Have to agree. Trying to eat your meal with clouds of smoke passing through is certainly a put-off.
As a smoker I was always happier to sit outside and have a smoke and smoking bans have been great in getting pubs and cafes to provide outside seating.
Did the article say all public areas?

Totaly agree with both of you. Smokers in Spain should have no problem with popping outside to designated area for a puff of their cancer sticks. Lets hope we dont get too many negatives on this one.

In Ireland we've had this law for some time so I'm well used to it. As a smoker I still think it's a good thing as I feel that just because I want to puff away the person next to me probably doesn't! Being used to standing outside in all weathers to have a fag (even at my own house) I can't see it being any great hardship sitting or standing in the sun to have one.

Hi Allan,
For me it's a matter of getting them to abide by THIER laws. The current law states that any premises >100SqM, that would includes both the Clover and the resturants, should provide seperate smoking and non-smoking areas. So for now I'd like them to abide by that.

I think that what Allen is tryng to say is that we expect people from overseas ,vsitors or people living in the uk
to abide by the laws of this country.
Though for some unknown reason some brits still exxpect to live by their rules & not the rules of the country they are visiting or livng in.
Ufortunatly we have met quite a few of those pompous brits not only in spain but other countries too.
Have to say we also think this new legistration is great.
The one thing that stopped us visiting the clover as often as we would wish wa because of the smoke.
Sorry you smokers but its true & having no smoking & smoking areas does not stop the smoke from drifting across the room.
