Ok as the weather is getting hotter over the next few days, we are looking to escape for some sea breeze.
What's the best beach in the area. We tend to go to Los alcasares due to the fact the mar menor water is warm.

Percheles is great, it's where the spanish go, but there are no facilities there. I actually prefer the other side of Mazarron at Bolneuvo. The further you go the better they seem to be.

There are plenty of great beaches without the need to drive all the to Los alcasares, the beach by the Bahia hotel has great sand bars restaurant and a really warm shallow bay to swim in. Although it is well used by the Spanish during holiday season we were there yesterday plenty of space for all will post some pictures I took later

Percheles and Calnegrie best two beaches by a country mile if you are prepared to look for them and not want facilities although Calnegrie has a bar at high season and I think there maybe a bar at the top of the hill at Percheles but I have not yet walked up to it. The beach near to the Old Yaught Club just outside the Port is pleasant with loads of facilities and Bol Nuevo is nice but I find the drop into the water a bit precarious for young children and pebbly. I forgot about Cal Negre. We cycled along there and the beach looked great. There are some lovely bars at Punte Negre, but the beach there is quite pebbly/stony although who cares when you have menu del dia for about 8/9 euros! Go on a Wednesday and the menu del dia has Paella as it's main course, and the special salad starter is huge!
With regards to the Yacht Club, you can walk further along (I think!) and the beaches are really kid friendly, and very shallow too, and definitely no pebbles! Mind you, as long as there's no seaweed I'm happy as I have a real aversion to the stuff! I think that might be the beach that is by the Hotel Bahia actually. All along there is great.

Perchelles, park to the far right of the car park (massive and free) and use the little bay in the middle of the 3 sandy ones (it's the nicest sand and has a bit of shelter with the cliffs - see below), the one to the far right is a nuddy beach remember

If you don't mind a 45 min drive I would say go to Isla Plana or just passed there La Azohia. Isla Plana has a beach bar and a few cafes and there is a very nice restaurant at La Azohia. My tip would be to go late afternoon, go straight for a bite to eat then crash out on the beach until after dark. In high summer it's warm enough to go into the until late in the evening. For directions - head towards Puerto de Mazarron and turn off the main road at the round about just before Lidl. Isla Plana is signposted from this roundabout. For La Azohia just carry on along the coast road until you run out of road.

45 mins, you must drive like my wife or use a Sinclair C5! 25 mins tops to any of the beaches mentioned and with the roads being so quiet here it doesn't feel like 25 mins. JF

If you fancy a longer day out/drive, I would recommend Calblanque just before the La Manga resort
It is a protected nature area so nothing in the way of facilities but it is a fabulous wide open beach. Gets a bit windy and the sea can be rough so not sure if its suitable for kids
Follow the motorway towards La Manga strip/Cabo de Palos and you will see the signs on the right. Its a bit of a hairy ride down a long dirt track once you come off the main road, a 4 x 4 would be handy at times !
