Hi All
When we first visit to furnish our newly purchased apartment we have decided to drive to Spain to have a bit of a road trip on the way and we'll be coming in a van so we can do running round when we get there and fill it up with all the shopping we'll need to be doing.
But then we thought we could fill up the van an bring a lot of items over as we've heard that some places in Spain can be expensive and we'll need to shop around. We thought about buying a sofa bed and dining room furniture in the UK as we could get that on interest free credit which frees up cash for us buying other items and this will fit in the van no problem. Also we could fill up with bedding, kitchen stuff etc, is it cheaper in the UK???
As we are unable to shop around in Spain and compare prices to the UK just wanted to know your thoughts on this. Would it be cheaper to buy beds in the UK and bring them over? We have access to a trailer and its not that much more on the ferry. What about other items large or small? Atleast if we came out with the sofa bed we'd have somewhere to sleep when we got there, and the way the ferries are timed we wont be arriving till 9pm at night!
Friends of ours who also have an apartment on the same site bought flat pack furniture in the UK and had it shipped over as it was cheaper. We'd be grateful for any advice.
Many thanks
Cathie

Hi Cathie and welcome.
I know when we bought our apartment nearly three years ago we brought nearly everthing in the uk and hired a van to bring it over at the time the exchange rate pound to euro was dire so we found it better to buy in the uk, as a comparison try the Ikea uk web site and compare the price with the ikea spain (there is a Ikea In Murcia) mostly the same products sold in each country so will give you a good idea if you decide to buy in spain here is the link to ikea spanish web site

Hi Graham
We had a friend look and compare prices for Ikea and Spain is 30% more expensive than th UK! The exchange rate is not great at the min and that why we thought it better to buy as much as we could in the UK.
Hi 'Bookerhall' - we are based on Las Terrazas de la Torre.
Many thanks.
Cathie

Hi Cathie, we found it was a mixed bag in Spain when we furnished our apartment earlier this year. We shipped some items from the UK, mostly flat pack boxed items and bought the rest in Spain. Ikea was cheaper on some items and we decided on beds and mattresses to purchase from Murcia rather than ship as their mattresses are different to those in the uk (not sure if it is correct but we assumed that they would be more suitable for the Spanish climate) There are lots of furniture shops near DFS (you can google it then just drive down the roads to find the rest) they have modern or traditional and lots speak English and will deliver for free. We actually found (after we had unfortunately already bought a lot of items) that El Corte Ingles in Cartagena was also very reasonably priced. Mercadona just outside Cartagena is great for pans, plates and small electrical items. Worten is on the same industrial estate and good for larger electrics, and finally Leroy Merlin on the same estate is like our B&q. Good luck, we managed to do most of ours over 10 days at Easter, it half killed us but was worth it as we had 4 further very chilled holidays afterwards! Wendy

Hi Cathie Welcome to Terrazas, we bought a complete package from DFS including household equipment, pans kettle, iron etc. they gave us a contact for fridge, freezer microwave, washing machine and dish washer. They delivered and installed and set up everything, even put shelves and pictures and mirrors in place, really first class and keep you informed every step. Highly recommended. We dealt with Cora, they are all English and a family business. Good luck Dianne & Jeff

Hi Cathie
First of all a warm welcome to Terrazas, great resort with a great community.
We also used DFS to furnish our apartment and they were excellent, they also lent us a settee when we first completed so we had time to choose what we wanted as to not rush into things.
Thouroughly recommend
Regards
Kevin

Hi Cathie,
We bought a property on terrazas (269 0F) last year and purchased almost all our furniture through DFS, they are helpful, not pushy, have good quality stuff, and fitted everything before we came over. When we arrived for the first time after purchasing the apartment we popped in to them for a few extra items we could see we could do with and within half an hour they were there getting it fitted. Can highly recommend them. They also sorted out our light fittings and put us in touch with Debbie at The Electrical Store for all our white goods, which were also all fitted and ready for use before we got there.
Good luck with it all
Claire & Richard

Hi there,
We have just bought on terrazaes and got a quote from DFS.,but decided that we would do it ourselves.
We considered bringing a van over with everthing in from the uk,,as the advantage being that you know where to get the best deals. We then decided to hire a van from a company in San javier, and buy all the furniture from ikea, we didnt find much difference in prices in the UK. We bought all the electrical appliances from a great shop in Roldan ( recommended), they are a family business whos prices were as good, if not better than the big boys. From buying everything at 6.30 on a wednesday , everyrhing was installed the following morning by 10.30 !. "fantastic service!".
The only thing we're struggling with is outside furniture.......... anyone point us in the right direction please ?

If you dont want to use the recommended shops could always look at the shops at Meditranna Cartagena. Its about now Carrefour start stocking outside furniture (we got our outside dining chairs from there 3 years ago and have not seen any like it since). Also LeRoy Merlin will start stocking as well as JYSK - a good shop for towels also just just along the parade of shops left of Media Mart. Carol & Roy
