Has anyone got internet access sorted at DV. Was just wondering what the situation is as my husband would be able to spend more time there if he didn't have to go in search of internet cafes!
Guessing people generally don't have internet as we only really get posts / pics here from people on their return from trips.

As at May the telephone lines had not yet bee been connected to our block (block 1) and the site office were not able to give us a date when the lines would be going in. So internet appears to be way down their list of priorities.

It would be a blessing as when I am working I go to internet cafe in Monte Duquesa..which is not too bad as there is scope for working and drinking at same tme..

I have a contact, who has told me he can install wifi into our apartment for 100 euros and he then charges 30euros a month. If anyone would like his name/number just drop me a line, we haven't had ours done yet as I use my friends down the road when i'm over there.

Carleen,
A Wi-Fi installation can only take place once the telephone lines are in place, unless you are going to use a satelite internet connection.
Best regards
Michael

Just noticed that Fibby has posted a useful web site address on the general chit chat section, under the sub heading Estepona WiFi which is good for searching out WiFi locations

Me too. It is possible to have wifi installed in your apartment, when telefonica deliver the adsl service, and then allow you fellow residents access over your link. you would need to come to some commercial agreement with them as it would need to be on all the time.

The only problem with that, John, I think, is the strength of the signal. We piggy-backed a few unsecured networks last year in the port, when we stayed in Marina Duquesa, but at times the signal strength was quite inadequate. And, if I'm correct the usual domestic wireless network usually doesn't reach beyond 100 yards or so, but I may be wrong. Think it might be something to bring up with AEA about a wi-fi hot spot for the community and see how feasible that is.

One of my neighbours at DV uses internet through his mobile phone (connected to his laptop) however this service is shaky at best. We were advised that Telefonica would not install phone lines until the demand was at a certain level. As the estate is mostly empty/holiday apts I think this will be a long way off. We need to get together a list of all owners who would like a telephone line installing and demand that Telefonica install lines. I move to DV in Feb 08 and I need internet for my job/studying when I get out there or the internet cafe is going to be sick of the sight of me after a while!!!

Personally, I think a wi-fi hotspot the best solution for all. This is something that GaryB first mentioned some time ago and I agree with him.
As it seems the community is mostly holiday or rental, with a smaller percentage resident, this would be an ideal solution for all. We could all access wirelessly, whether we are there personally or have friends/family using the apartment or renting it out - without each owner having to pay a monthly payment on top of installation charge for their own personal connection - which they may not actually use for most of the year!
I'm not sure, but I don't think setting up a wi-fi for a community of our size would be too expensive, so I think it's something that should be put to AEA and maybe raised at the next/first AGM as a point on the agenda.
As Daniela says, accessing via your mobile is dodgy to say the least! Plus, if you need to conduct business remotely, then your mobile isn't always really appropriate.
What says you all??

I use my blackberry for emails and internet whilst in DV and as it is basically a mobile phone I can agree that coverage is very intermittent. I think wifi providers would be haPpy to provise a node in DV for 600 potential users.
