Dear All,
I shall never forget the day my beatiful young daughter went so excitedly to her first day's work in the office.
she was immaculately turned out and smelled wonderful only to return that night stinking of stale tobacco wreaking through all her clothes and hair.
personally I would not just bash them I would rather hang them than return to those days, humanely of course.
Regards
Norman

Dear all,
my husband on the odd occasion used a local bar to watch football on sky sports channel, however after leaving the bar one day with a sore throat from the tobacco smoke filled air which had engulfed the bar like fog he has never been back again. It always amazes me how families can take children into places like this and sit there while they and their offspring fill their lungs full of smoke. Regarding excessive alchohol consumption the only person you are harming is yourself whereas tobacco smoke is harming others. Norman I agree with you re. stale tobacco smells on clothes, I think it has happened to all of us at one time or another, it is offensive.
regards Kathy

Yes have to agree on this, our son came to stay with us for a month in Spain he has never smoked. But he got invited to a couple of dart matches so he showered and changed smelt lovely.
But when he came back the smell of smoke reached me before he did it was alwful made him go and change his clothes and shower again. He only went once more I think he thought my nagging was not worth the effort, but he did not like it either.
We try and sit outside if there is a lot of smokers in the bar's, which their normally is.
Pat.

I am not going to get into this again, evryone is entitled to either smoke or not smoke......sit in a bar and smoke or sit in a bar and breathe fresh air......
what i would say though replying to this rather silly comment ......." Regarding excessive alchohol consumption the only person you are harming is yourself"
My friends mother was killed by a man who was too drunk to walk let alone drive.....she left 3 children and a husband!!
I wouldn't ask them if Alcohol only harms the person using it, would you?
some statistics below for you to chew over..
How can alcohol be blamed for 100,000 deaths each year?
- 5% of all deaths from diseases of the circulatory system are attributed to alcohol.
- 15% of all deaths from diseases of the respiratory system are attributed to alcohol.
- 30% of all deaths from accidents caused by fire and flames are attributed to alcohol.
- 30% of all accidental drownings are attributed to alcohol.
- 30% of all suicides are attributed to alcohol.
- 40% of all deaths due to accidental falls are attributed to alcohol.
- 45% of all deaths in automobile accidents are attributed to alcohol.
- 60% of all homicides are attributed to alcohol.
100,000 deaths. That's more than a statistic. That is 100,000 individuals with faces. 100,000 individuals with lives not fully lived. 100,000 individuals grieved by mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and children.

Dear Georgia,
excellent post without the first paragraph, you are nearly there.
truly chastening statistics.

awful though they no doubt are, those stats are talking about excess, not the moderation the majority of us live by. The person who enjoys wine with a meal ,or a pint or two down the pub now and again (or at home if not in driving distance) will come to no harm and can even benifit. Those who enjoy a fag with a meal, at a pub, or at home are in very real danger of cancer, and at the very least are destroying their heart/lungs, and that of anyone in distance of their smoke.
Yes it' should be a choice at home if you are on your own, .......much like banging yourself over the head with a piece of wood at home is a choice!!

I know many who, years ago, said, 'I'll give up smoking when the price of 20 is £1.95!' They're still smoking! HOW much is 20 now in a supermarket in the UK? Cheapest is £4.45 (Balmoral), Benson & Hedges Gold Superkings £5.98, the prices get higher Taken from Asda site

yes, we haven't even mentioned the hideous cost to the smoker and health system. No doubt fag tax is an issue, but in no way justifies the suffering or addiction.

Unbelievably, the budget hasn't raised tax on cigarettes!
VAT up from 17.5% to 20% as from January.

Goodstich.
well considering we are talking about SPAIN it doesn't cost YOUR health system anything if people smoke here wouldn't you say.
I wouldn't imagine you ever intend to live here so i do not see your concerns?
I know.....i have a great idea........everyone who loves the way the UK does things, live in the UK, everyone loves the way Spain does things,Live in Spain.........we all accept each others rules and only visit if this is taken into consideration......simple...euphoria.
BTW....i am just off to the Travel agents......first trip to the North pole to moan about the snow, secondly on to the Rio carnival as i think their terrible abuse of loud music needs addressing.....................

All I can say is this:
When I go to a bar or restaurant to eat and/or drink, the last thing I want is to smell smoke, leave alone taste it in the back of my throat, which is exactly what happens when people who are sat next to me 'light up' whilst I am still eating and/or drinking.
They say it's freedom of choice...
How the hell is it when I'm sat there, I don't want to smell, taste and ingest into my lungs there stale, second hand smoke.
It's not my choice, so why do they inflict their choice on me!
They want to smoke, fine!
Just go somewhere where they are not affecting the freedom of choice of someone who doesn't want the smoke!

It's interesting what people say about smoking in bars and restaurants here, as when I lived in the UK before the smoking ban I hated being in smoky bars. Now that we live here, if we go into a bar and anybody is smoking we sit as far away as possible, and it doesn't affect me the same way. Of course windows are open and doors are open now that the weather is lovely, which obviously helps. We have noticed that people don't smoke so much in restaurants and often leave to smoke a cigarette (our Spanish friend's husband does, because she doesn't approve of him smoking!) What I hate seeing is mothers smoking near their children.

Unfortunately, at the moment, in many places, the right to decide whether to allow smoking on the premises rests with the owner of the premises - so if you want to go somewhere where smoking is permitted then you accept the consequences. That is your freedom of choice. If you don't like it, then the owner is obviously not too concerned if you choose to drink/dine/socialise elsewhere!
Not saying it's right, just that it's the way it is until the law changes it. And, of course, there are always limits on free choice!!
And just to add I am an ex-smoker, who hasn't smoked in over eleven years and has no intention of ever starting again - and who has limits to the amount of smoke she can tolerate when eating/drinking in Spain, so I choose where I eat/drink accordingly!! My freedom of choice!

I am also an ex-smoker, however two things come to mind:
1) I never smoked anywhere near anyone eating, even if it was in a bar.
2) I had a Tate-ta-Tate with an English guy last year, who when sat in a restaurant in the port, lit up whilst I was sat there eating. Now the restaurant we were sat in is a no smoking restaurant, and when I asked him politely three times to stop smoking, he said, in a loud an booming voice "this isn't England!"... to which, after the third same answer, I stood up and said "I know it isn't! Now put that out before I do!"
Needless to say, he didn't extinguish the cigarette, but did slope off outside a bit sharpish! During all this time the owner hadn't said anything to the person in question, however did come over to apologise to me, after the man when outside.

Techno, we had the same thing in Dubai a couple of years ago. Booked a table in the non-smoking (enclosed) part of the restaurant only to have a table of about 8 sat next to ours and some of them start lighting up. When I complained to the manager he apologised but said that they were full and had seated them in the n-smoking section and permitted them to smoke!!!! This was a very pricey (over €100ph) restaurant in the Shangri La Hotel! We weren't impressed and were eventually compensated with a couple of very expensive bottles of wine - which didn't alleviate the smoke, but helped tolerate it !!
But it is unacceptable when you have specifically chosen a non-smoking restaurant only to find the management/owners do not apply their own policy!!
