Yes opening a bank a/c in UK is a murder, tried many times last year & failed, nearly gave up till 1 accepted me.

I presume that the "polava" is to cut down on money laundering so maybe a necessary evil?

If you are resident in Spain, you cannot actually open a bank account in UK unless of course you lie about your address!

Georgia is right, certainly in BBVA you can pay in a UK cheque but it can take 3 or 4 weeks for it to be cashed and you have to accept whatever rate they decide to give you!

We have a Barclays account in Spain which you can pay Uk cheques into but I am not sure of the waiting time for clearance.

I can also transfer money with a UK cheque if that helps.

hsbc gave me one but I've to use my brother's address as I used to live in that address for many years. I'm not a Spanish resident yet. I've to say that the 1st time I went to hsbc they wouldn't let me open one but asked me to transfer my a/c to them but on 2nd visit I spoke to a different person.

make sure you agree charges up front.

You will more than likely be robbed and have to wait weeks for cleared funds.

The bank has never charged me anything for cashing a UK cheque but you have to accept the exchange rate as is at that time.

I can pay a UK cheque of my own into BBVA up to 500 pounds and they let me use the money instantly, over that amount I have to wait for clearence.

I have an account with Cajamar and regularly deposit a cheque for £2000 - the charges are 10 euros and I have to wait a month for the money to be cleared BUT the exchange rate I get is even better than any that I can negotiate with the tranfer companies like Currencies Direct, HIFX etc. and they want transfers of £5000 or more to have charge free transfers.

I can even watch the rate they will give me on-line every day and choose my moment

Im happy!!

Our UK cheques get paid into our Sterling Account with Solbank - and only take a few days to clear. There is a nominal charge, but I'm unsure how much. I know that when we last did it... we decided that financially it wasn't worth accepting UK cheques unless they were over a certain amount. We tend to stick to PayPal or bank transfers now, when our clients in the UK pay us. We don't have them often now - but we do have a cheque from Google coming soon (according to hubby, as I've just asked him)... so will know then. I'll try to remember to post the amount in here when it happens.

Elle xx

I heartily agree with Spirit of Spain, Cajamar are a fantastic bank, at least my branch is, but I won't tell you where that is, whatever amount I put in  be it £1000 or £10,000 ,they charge me 6 Euro, it should take 30 days to clear but if I need it I can get it immediately, the staff are wonderful and helpful and it is a real pleasure to do business with them, I have used other branches and they have been the same.  I have heard that Solbank charges are horrendous.
