For those people in the Vera/ Garrucha/ Mojacar area, no longer do you have to complain that the Intermarches shut (great shop that it was). Iceland has opened up in its place now Store link here. Not open on a Sunday though which is a bit unfortunate.

Going out on Friday, so can give it the once over

There seem to be Icelands springing up all over the place.

I assume they are all franchises but they seem to do incredibly well.

I think it's probably because most Spanish supermarkets have a very tiny frozen foods section.

They are all owned by one company - Overseas Foods SL who are based in Tenerife, they are actively looking for new sites on the Costa del Sol in all areas. There as been a lot of speculation recently in the uk business press about Iceland being taken over, don't know what would happen then, they do seem to be taking more lines from Waitrose but of course not frozen.

Mark

They will open as many Sunday's as the Spanish trading laws will allow them to, ie high summer and the run up to christmas.

When the Intermarche was there, it was open every Sunday through the year (except Xmas, Easter, etc) until 1pm and later in the holiday seasons. Just seems a bit of a backwards step to have nowhere that opens on a Sunday now, and having to rely on the service station down the road.

Yes the Sunday trading laws here seem to be a bit hit and miss and a bit like the uk before the reforms in 1994

The major supermarket chains would love to open every Sunday but they are governed by the size of thier shop floor and the amount of staff they employ, the larger shops are only alowed to open on so many Sunday's in a year and of course they keep them for the most profitable times, whereas the smaller operators can open 24/7

Personally as a resident I like it, but I can see how it's an inconvenience to some.
