Mike - " There seems little dispute that the number of people able to speak English is at least double the number of those who speak Spanish." There you go again. In your head there may be little dispute. In your head, the earth may be flat. But if you want anybody else to believe it or if you want any credibility, you gotta come up with some evidence or credible source. Otherwise it isn't fact. It's just one person's unscientific opinion. Which is fair enough as long as you don't try to pass it off as fact.
"To always demand proof and source is an age old ploy to discredit another’s argument." Perhaps because most reasonable people would take the view that that argument has no basis if you can't back it up with evidence. Your criminal justice system would be "Mike says you're guilty" - no evidence, no proof. Off you go to do your time.
"Whenever proof is shown it is challenged again and again. It becomes tedious and one eventually leaves the debate having better things to do". Google translation says when you've lost the argument you go away and do something else.
"Do those who challenge source meticulously go through their daily newspaper and demand proof and source on every story? I hardly think so." And do we believe everything we read in our daily newspaper. I hardly think so. And why not? Because if it has no evidence or credible source to back it up it's just tittle-tattle.
The anonymity point is another evasion as you seek to deflect attention from the fact that your undisputed facts are not facts at all. The validity of an argument isn't dependent on who's proposing it.
You acccuse others of being rude. All of the points above are attacking your argument. They are not attacking you as a person. I don't know you, have no wish to know you and have absolutely nothing against you as a person. I am simply pointing out that your arguments are weakened by your practice of presenting as facts something that you have evidence to support.

For goodness sake, JEK - whoever you are; the figures are there on Google and elsewhere. If you are so cocksure, as you are about everything else, then bloody well go and prove otherwise. When you do so we can all move on. Alright? Happy? Find someone else to constantly nit-pick with; I am ignoring you. God! You're the bar room's ultimate bore. If I told you the bloody date you would get yo Gregorian calender out.

I usually try to avoid getting into arguments with anonymous posters on here however, as I suspect some of your comments have been aimed at me, I want to make a couple of points.
1. If by "they" you mean Spanish people, and by "us" you mean British people, what makes you think that "they" hate "us"? We have many good Spanish friends, as do other British people living in our area. If "they" seem to hate "you", perhaps your attitude is at fault - even though I assume from your previous posts that you speak fluent Spanish?
2. Who said I can't communicate? All I was saying is that I check my written Spanish in case I make a grammatical error. I don't know how old you are, but I am assuming from your comments that you are British too, and I have noticed that your grammar and spelling aren't 100% perfect and that is after a lot more than 3 years! So please don't knock those of us who are trying to improve ourselves and who didn't reach your level of proficiency in the Spanish language after 6 months.

Perhaps you can point me in the direction of the post where you said that the Spanish are really nice people? I can read English, as well as Spanish, but obviously missed the post you were talking about! The post that I was referring to was this one: "OH NO THEY DONT THEY HATE US", which implied that you felt Spanish people hated you and other British people. You need to read carefully too as I never suggested that you were a "spanish hater" - only that IF they hated you it was more likely to be because of your attitude rather than your nationality.
I quite agree that the Spanish are really nice people, which is why I have so many Spanish friends and why I like to socialise with my Spanish neighbours. I also think that the British are very nice people, which is why I have many British friends too. There are good and bad people the world over and I don't like to generalise, however I enjoy living in a Spanish community, and haven't come across any hostility, which is why I wanted to pick you up on the point that you appeared to be making.
It's good to know that your spelling skills are better than your typing skills, and I apologise if I seemed to be suggesting otherwise. Maybe you need to read your post before hitting the Post Reply button, and edit it where necessary?

And finally, when the argument is totally lost, resort to personal abuse of those who expose your weaknesses.

Chefette, I would ignore your remark, however I don't want anybody to read it out of context and think I am the sort of person to make offensive comments about anyone, no matter what nationality. If I have offended you I am, of course, more than happy to apologise for it. If you can kindly point out the offensive comment I will ask Justin to delete it.

This thread is getting rather boring.
Some English people are comfortable communicating in Spanish whereas others or not.
Some Spanish opt to communicate in English and others do not.
Many Spanish professionals to work for the expat community know they need to speak English or they will not get the work and for this reason they publish their websites in English and claim fluency. However even the professionals get angry when we start telling them how they should work.
Some Spanish dislike the invasion whereas others are happy to live amongst foreign people.
The same applies to the UK and there are some there who dislike foreign people living in the UK. Probably what makes Spain different is that the foreign people came with money to invest in the economy whereas in the UK many foreign nationals came seeking work and benefits.
and that's just life ...............

To Suemac: You write very eloquently & I certainly do not find your posts offensive in any way. In fact I find you extremely interesting.
On the other hand I find Chefette to be extremely rude in virtually every post ... not just towards you, Suemac ... with one aim, seemingly, to rile others.
As for your last post in here, Chefette, you say 'suemac as a spaniard i find your comments grosley offensive' yet your post advertising yourself as a translator for Charlie11 in http://www.eyeonspain.com/forums/posts-long-13621.aspx says '
Good morning Charlie
I am English and live in Fuengirola, speak fluent Spanish and have worked as a company director and business manager in Spanish speaking countries so I am very interested in what you suggest. My phone number is 952475896.
best regards
Alan

If chefette lives in Fuengirola then this is also a strange comment:-
"i live, by choice in a spanish area where we never see any English. thank god"
Fuengirola is crawling with English people - hard to avoid them!

I'm sure many will realise that Jazil has used a perfectly correct Spanish phrase that means "to get on well with somebody", nothing to do with breadrumbs.
