Wow, you lucky dog! You can't go wrong anywhere in Spain but, of course, some places are going to be preferable depending on your personal likes and dislikes. The 3 months I was in Málaga city were fantastic for me. You are welcome to read through my blog at RonInAustinTX(dot)blogspot(dot)com. Maybe that would work for you too. Good luck! (and post your adventures) BTW, I was paying 400€/month for a 1 bedroom/1bath apartment and I was told I was paying too much.

Funny - been here 10 years and never ever heard that. Maybe my hearing's damaged? At least my capitalisation of proper nouns still works OK.

I am very surprised you have never heard the association between TORRE and BLACPOOL here is one article I found which backs up my comments
However since your post I was intrigued to find out more and in recent years it has I understand improved, so on the basis of this I withdraw my out of date comments and apologise for any offence caused.
It is safe to say that Torremolinos has undergone many transformations in its history. Around half a century ago, it was a small provincial fishing village, with no aspirations of becoming a fully-fledged tourist town. Then, in the 90s, it garnered a bad reputation as the Spanish ‘trash town’, so to speak: the epitome of all you wouldn’t want to encounter in Spain – it was ugly, it was dirty, and it was trashy, and sadly void of any charming Spanish culture. Torremolinos began to resemble the Spanish version of Blackpool, in many ways, mostly due to the vast and sudden (and badly managed) growth in tourist attention.

Regains its attractiveness
However, local authorities soon took action (something that can be quite rare in Spain – “mañana, mañana”, “tomorrow, tomorrow”, is probably any Spaniard’s most well-worn phrase in his vocabulary), realizing the potential of Torremolinos as an attractive holiday resort. After all, it has the perfect location: the Costa del Sol is arguably one of the most beautiful Spanish regions, with great weather, and frankly, those two things always make a coastal town a veritable tourist magnet.
And so Torremolinos underwent its final transformation from ‘el Blackpool’ to ‘el Torremolinos guapo’, a clean, beautiful, well-managed, tourist-friendly yet dignified coastal town, with the help of council-instated daily street cleaners, landscaping, and new tourist attractions.

Rod, i would say that all the "costa del sol" has experimented that kind of growth since the 60´s, all of them were fisherman villages, the only difference between Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella... is the kind of people who choose each place, for the medium british tourist any of this cities will be ok, just depends how much money they want to spend. Also all this cities are near, you can enjoy Marbella and Estepona staying at Torremolinos.
I told Torremolinos because it´s the nearest city to Malaga airport, i did not say Granada because he want to swin and i thought he was looking for a hot place and Granada in winter is cold.
There are a lot of places, difficult to choose.

Rod, no offence taken, I don't wave a banner for Torremolinos or anything like that, but it does have a lot going for it, such as mentioned by anthonyo, and compared to some other resorts along the coast in fact has far more soul and character. Having said that, for the OP, unless he requires some sort of established expat community, or is gay, I would recommend Málaga, specifically the Malagueta area since he has a good rental budget and that area is very nice and right by the beach as well as the city centre.

hey everyone, thanks for the helpful replies - sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you all, I've been away. ive started thinking about going somewhere west of malaga, marbella, evliria sort of area as it looks like I can get a a really nice place close to the beach for under 1000 a month, and the areas are perhaps big enough to meet people and make friends down there. the beaches seem alot nicer too. havent been able to find as many nice places in malaga old town as i have in marbella, elviria sort of area, although its possible im looking in the wrong places (yaencontre, enalquiler etc.)

How about Marbella - town centre seems like a nice place to be. Quite a large place, good beaches, good connections to the airport etc...

I visited MarBwana. It's nice but I wouldn't move there. Why would anybody go to Spain and hole up there? If you go, notice how the wait staff is different there than anywhere else in Spain. It comical.

With a €1,000 budget you won't have a problem getting anywhere decent along the coast, but with what you are looking for Malaga must be your best option. Marbella would also be an option, but I don't think you'll get that "city" feel there, although it's probably the next best thing - it is a great place where you won't have a problem socialising with locals and expats alike. It's only about twenty minutes by car to Malaga airport from Marbella and about thirty minutes to Gibraltar airport - bus services both way but alot longer travelling time.
If you are serious about moving here, with your budget you won't have a problem at all.
