currently in spain, those who lose their jobs get 80% of their wage for 2 years.
after this Rajoy extended the welfare benefits to 400e.
so nobody is starving or going without.

Moncapitain, do a little research before you post !! Currently under Rajoy, you get 70% of your salary for the first 6 months, then after this it is reduced to 50%, and you only get up to max 2 yeras if you have been working and contributing to the Social security for a number of years, so a lot of people do not qualify.
Ayuda of 426€ for some families but not all.
Fact, there are a lot of families going hungry.

Moncapitain - Maybe you could tell that to the people who are queing up at Cruz Roja, every day to receive food for their families.
You also comlpetly missed the point that there are many, many families that have no Income whatsoever !! What these people need is work and some hope for the future, so they can support their families and meet their overheads each month, not people like you calling them "feckless"

but they can get this €400 from the local welfare office or move somewhere in the EU where they have jobs or a "free for all" welfare system such as the UK.

They cannot get this 426, in many cases as I said before they do not qualify. A good friend of mine, good education, Degree in business studies was forced to move to the U.K in June, she had been trying to get a Job for 4 years here. She found work 2 weeks after arriving. She was one of these people, who after her unemployment benefit was up, was not entitled to anything else. She kept herself for the time she was unemployed, from her savings. She is one of many young people, who have moved to another country. The people with families and young children, and the burden of an outstanding Mortgage cannot do this.

but if they are not paying the mortgage, why can't they move?
there are jobs available in the UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, Holland to name but a few.
even if you have a mortgage - why can you still not move for a few years and keep your house?
i know many eastern europeans who kept their houses while in the UK . why is it such a problem for you?
or did you get a jumbo morgage?

No, no Jumbo mortgage, 1 member of the family working, child in school, no buyers, renting is a huge risk, which is the only other way to go ? OR stop paying the Mortgage and just go. that is feckless behaviour !!

you could consider to work away for a few weeks at a time?
i know many families that have to survive in this way during difficult times.
as you have one bread winner in the family, at least you have a few choices, you have the option of muddling through, working away temporarily or starting new somewhere else.
if you do not have a large mortgage, im sure you can make arrangements to lower the payments until you get back on your feet.
please stop making excuses that you are powerless.

Moncaptian, just to finish I am not making excuses at all, and we are paying . We are off the subject, of the Spanish people and what they are going through, which is what this thread is all about. Good afternoon.

yes evento - the spanish people are faced with some difficult choices whether to move to where there is work, work away for periods of time or try and muddle through.
all not ideal for those with families, but these decisions have been made for 100's of years and im sure everyone will survive as i am an eternal optimist...

The husband of a friend of mine has gone to work in France for a while this autumn and this income will support the family. Luckily his brother lives in France and was able to fnd him some work. I imagine it's not anything like that easy for most people to just walk into a job abroad although in our village in Andalucia there do seem to be quite a few people with French connections. For my friend's husband, it beats the short-term contracts he's been getting in construction in Spain over the last few years - on occasion, he's worked for three months, being continually promised his wages until he's given up after three months, having not been paid a penny and having spent a fortune on travel etc. I think he'll be better off in France for the time being. Some people I know, who are now in their fifties, used to work abroad in Germany or France - some (younger ones) still go up to France in September for the 'vendimia.' They get some welcome cash to supplement what is often an agriculturally-based income. Quite a few used to go to Catalonia too (almost abroad!). I think those times have come again. Quite a few people now see the future of their children abroad - they mostly mention the UK and the USA. Another friend's daughter is going to come and stay with us next year in the UK to improve her English and we've invited others. We are in a good position to help with that sort of thing and repay some of the kindness we've been shown by their families over the years. I think that we British can think of ways of helping that will be welcome to our Spanish friends and won't necessarily cost us anything to do.

Latest news out of Spain is their budget deficit is 43.4 Billion euros Jan - Oct.
Looks like the Spanish government is spending like a drunken sailor, this can only end badly as you cannot keep stealing wealth from the future to spend today.

the UK is in an even bigger mess - we have a massive public sector and over half the population are on welfare!
the UK has printed over £300B so far and now that Goldman Sachs has taken over, will likely print even more.
the GBP is heading towards worthlessness!
but what else is to be expected when most people in the UK see the government as some kind of paternal figure.

Yes, I've always believed that part of Marx's theory that the fall of capitalism is inevitable. The whole basis of companies expecting forever to increase their profits year-on-year just seems doomed, coupled with the modern phenomenon of governments and individuals forever increasing their debt. Of course, it also leads to environmental disaster with the depletion of the earth's resources. It's all a bit miserable, really. We need some exceptional individuals with vision and determination to try and turn this around, but I can't see any contenders yet.
