i think we are suffering from the biggest leadership vacuum the world has ever known.
im optimistic that capitalism will not fail completely, but those living off government handouts could be in for a very hard landing when the house of cards collapse (debt=money).
worryingly, more and more people are going to retire in absolute poverty because they belived the government would look after them when they got older, yet with the UK in so much debt, this will never be possible.

Yes Eggcup, we do need a few of those special people, but they have a habit of coming to a sticky end, so no one has the courage to step out of line.

Its the same new release in all the papers, the data came from an interview with Sonia Olea, the coordinator of the caritas campaign for homeless people, it reads :

I wonder how much the level of homelessness as defined using the current broad definitions has actually increased. There have always been loads of Spaniards living in sub-standard accommodation. In my village in Spain a bloke has lived in his ramshackle tin shack ever since I've known him and in the town where I previously lived there were stacks of what people called 'gitanos' living in very messy-looking places, probably without all the necessary amenities. There are also the usual 'new age travellers' always about, who seem to have chosen their lifestyle often, and would also be defined as homeless (I don't think their numbers would be great though). There was also a whole area of town where they didn't seem to have inside loos and urinated in the streets. I've also rented some very inadequate accommodation in my time where the electrics definitely would have failed any inspection. So, my question is: what has changed? Who are the new 'homeless' as opposed to people who have lived in these conditions for years?

I thought this might be of interest:-
The assistance, announced with a fanfare by the Government after a series of suicides, to help families in danger of being evicted from their homes for non-payment of mortgages, is for many turning into a saga.
The measure involves suspension of the eviction threat for two years; however, the banks will continue to add interest, including the punitive interest for delayed payments, and after the two years, borrowers may face a demand to pay all the accumulated interest in one go. The net result of the ‘assistance’ could amount to a 43.4% increase on the original loan.
There are 621,000 families in Spain in danger of being evicted.

thanks John. as Regan said, the most dreaded words are "Im from the Government and Im here to help".
It certainly makes sense for those who cannot pay the mortgage to make a deal with the bank to repudiate the loan and move into rented accomodation.
What are the bankruptcy laws like in Spain?
Can the Spanish who get left with negative equity just declare bankrupt easily in Spain or even avail of the UK's favourable bankruptcy laws like the Irish do?

That is the major problem in Spain, you cannot hand the keys back and walk away.In most cases the Bank will not allow this, hence the dire situation for a great many people. The debt keeps increasing and the property they bought keeps declining in value.

it was not a problem when these people borrowed the money. they were adults and went into this with their eyes wide open.
in many cases, they thought they were making such a smart move that they were going to get rich without any effort.

There is no bankruptcy law for individuals. Certain debts will disappear over time if they are not persued but a mortgage debt will never disappear. Only limited companies can claim "bankruptcy".
