My name is Minerva and I am Spanish by birth but lived in Canada most of my life.
I am now 35 and returned to Spain but I am embarrassed about waht I see in the customer service of utility providers.
I have started a facebook page: Exposing Spanish Utility Providers
please feel free to go ontheir and tell your story.
When we have enough of a following my goal is to take this and show the governement that
ignoring the issue is not working.
Help me stoip the injustice of taking all our money for profits regardless of laws.
Thank you and hope you can join my cause.
Minerva

I wouldn't say its the culture, I would put it down to have weak people in government. If these services whihc are basic necesities were controlled more closely by the government and more easily punnished, you would see how quickly they knocked themselves into shape. It is the same with the Banks, the bank of Spain just sat back letting the banks do what the hell they wanted when they wanted charging abusive interest rates and fees which wer and are illegal, banking on the fact that the customer will not do anyhting about it. This is the problem, as all the big big compnaies know that the government will not do anything they do what they want. Just controlling prices is not enough. Thses services should be regulated and there should be a faster customer claims channel established to keep them on their feet. This is typical spanish unfortnuately. Look at Aznar who helped privatise Endesa and then ended up on the board when he retired from politics earning a massive 200,000 a year for not even going to work. Do you think these politicians are prepared to squeeze the big utility companies? yes it is an injustice and I encourage you in your battle! Go for it! They annoy me like hell and drive me up the wall with their ridiculous thieving attitude and pathetic organisation. This also goes for Telefonica which is an absolute embarrasment when it comes to customer service.

Hello Minerva
I can imagine that it was a rather a culture shock to come from Canada and discover that what passes for customer service in Spain is such a low standard! We have had many "interesting" experiences!
You may like to take a look at a post I made on here yesterday about what I have just discovered about the last 12 months invoices from Spantel (telephone/internet service) it is in the same section as your post and is titled " Anyone using Spantel? Please check your bills..
I'll find your page on FB too.

one of the problems with your quest miverva is that currently a lot of people are trying to recover thier life savings that were stolen from them in spain.
when they have got this back and managed to get their lives back together maybe they will then be concerned about customer service at the phone company or electric company.

Hear what you are saying Mungry but in my opinion it is all part of the same problem: Bad customer service and having to fight for consumer rights are just a reflection of an endemic attitiude that runs through banks, politicians and big business.
Those with power think they can ride roughshod over customers and act with impunity. And you know what? They can as long as people are prepared to put up with the standards.

i am going to have to pull the culture card on this one.
it will take many generations and an entire culture shift to fix it.
maybe if we could bring back the british empire to take over spain we could have a fighting chance.

Hi all I don,t think that we Brits are in position to demand a culture change within another country after we have decided to move to it. Of course Spanish law should be upheld. But if day to day life is unbearable then move.

It's not just British people in Spain who want a culture change; Spaniards themselves are desperate for it and can often be willing to accept the guidance of people who come from a less corrupt country. Our children's headmaster once pleaded with my husband to stand for Mayor, saying the only way they could ensure electing someone who wasn't corrupt was if they came from a country like Britain. Of course, he had zero interest in getting involved in all those nasty political shenanigans. It would be enough to send a normal person around the twist.
