Remember when they said computers would make life much easier for us all. Now, to book an airline ticket is to enter (at your peril) an IQ Test. You will be required to jump through hoops and identify every ruse imaginable to extract more money from you. After booking I feel as though I have run a mental marathon.

Yes, I find it very stressful and prefer it if him indoors does it. When it comes to pressing the button to pay, I have to double-check everything. My husband once booked something like the 25th of April to 30th April - or thought he did. The computer automatically jumped to May, assuming he was staying a week and he didn't notice and had booked 25th April to 30th May. He just had to throw the flight and book another one. It's a rotten thing when an honest mistake is penalised so heavily. They say they want to change; well, they should get rid of a punitive system whereby you have to pay a fortune, even pay for a new flight just because you made a genuine mistake.

And I'm not surprised about this new thing of having to pay for pre-booked seats if you stay for over a week. What another rotten trick (assuming it wasn't just a computer glitch). Frankly, I don't care about pre-booked seats - you still have to make a run for it, in order to fit your cabin case in the lockers above you - as there's not enough space for everyone's. Their new advert where one family walks on their own slowly towards the 'plane is ridiculous and completely unlike the reality.

You haven't got to pay for pre-booked seats if you stay more than a week. You can book in online from any internet cafe or even hotels that have wifi for your return flight.
If you booked more than the week ahead, people who are paying to book seats wouldn't have much of a choice left.
BA, Virgin Atlantic and others only let you book in online 24 hours in advance for your return flight.
Vueling is also 7 days unless it's London in which case it's only 24 hours.
You can only check in online with Monarch if you've paid extra for a seat.
I'm not a fan of Ryanair and avoid them if I can but it's not that difficult.

I dont think booking in on line is a problem you can do this on most mobile phones or tablets but the problem occurs with printing out the bloody boarding card, but easyjet and some others are now letting you show boarding cards via the small screen which will solve this problem

Thanks for the heads up that IF I book a return flight with Ryanair then I will be hit with the seat fees. Now  it  does not take a genius to say  WHY BOOK A RETURN when they are 2 seperate journeys. Just book outward as a single and then return as a single. SIMPLES. ( Just one slight glitch you have to pay for outward with a sterling card and return with a euro card. Otherwise you will have to use Ryanairs conversion rate!! Its not THAT bad but not the best on the market)

The other option is always use another airline and probably incur extra costs in getting to another airport/s.

Sorry, I know it's easy to confuse me, but why can't you book a return flight at the same time? You book the return flight then, later on, book in online for your outward journey only. No need to book a seat if you do if 7 days before you go. Coming back, you already have your return flight and now just need to book in online for that flight, 7 days before. Pay once, book in twice.

You don't have to book in online or choose your seats when simply booking the return flight.

The booking process and the online check-in process are separate processes which should not be confused

Ryanair introduced some changes on 8th of April last which I would summarise as follows_

1.When making a booking with the airline, you must  now decide whether or not to  book a particular seat on plane

2.If you decide to book a seat, your options are as follows-

  a .Book a Premium seat(rows 1-5,16-17,32-33) for 10£/€ which includes Priority Boarding

b.Book a Regular seat with Priority Boarding for  7£/€

c.Book a Regular seat without Priority Boarding for 5£/€

3.You can still book Priority Boarding withouy booking a seat-you will be a Priority Boarder but your seat will be randomly allocated

4.You can totally ignore the seat booking process-in that case you will be randomly allocated a seat free  of charge

5.Ryanair discriminates between those who have booked a seat and those who have not at the online check-in

stage in a major respect,in that the former may  check-in online up to 30 days before flight date, the latter up to 7 days before flight date.Previously the limit was 15 days for all and many people check-ed online before leaving home and printed boarding passes for both outward and return journeys.Such persons if travelling on a journey of  longer than 7 days  but under 30 days can continue this practice only if they book a seat at time of booking. If they opt not to book a seat there is not a  huge problem but they will have to check-in online at their destination and print their boarding pass there

6.Seat booking can be effected after making original booking by using the Manage My Booking Facility on Ryanair website

7.There have been some favourable changes worth noting-

IThe penalty for failing to check-in online is still a whopping 70£/€,but if you check-in online and subsequently lose your printed boarding pass, the re-issue fee is now 15£/€

There is a 24-hour grace period for correction of errors made at  time of flight booking-however call centre must be  contacted in this case

A second small carry-on bag is now permitted

8.There may be unusual situations in which a person attempts to book a seat on one leg of a  holiday flight but not on other leg.Personally I always book outward and return flights separately which has advantages for me
