Information Required

Hello Everybody, new to the site for the simple reason as my wife and I are seriously looking at moving to Spain, our area of choice would be Costa del Sol, not necessarily on the coast but 15 - 20 minutes drive away.

I would like information on job availability for someone who at the moment can't speak English, having 20 years+ in manufacturing as a production Supervisor / Manager, but am willing to do anything to be able to live.

Secondly what sort of money would be required on a monthly basis to live comfortably.looking at renting a 2 bed property on a long term basis.

Any other advice and help would be very welcome.

Do you mean you cant speak Spanish  ( for someone who at the moment can't speak English ) Chance of getting a job is NIL, And you would need over a 1000 euro a month, plus medi cover.

Yes thanks for pointing that out, it is Spanish I can't speak.  English is normally good !

Even if you could speak fluent Spanish jobs are very hard to come by.

What work that is available is mainly seasonal, low paid and often no contract

So I would suggest your chance of work may not be nil but very very low

It might help if you could expand a bit on exactly why you are "seriously looking at moving to Spain". If it is purely to look for work / make a living, it doesn't make much sense. Thousands of Spaniards have left / are leaving for the simple reason there is no work here!

Count on around €500-€600 a month rent, plus bills etc. Private health cover initially, as already mentioned, until you find work (and that's assuming it's legal etc.). I would say you'll need around €1500 a month to be comfortable. So unless you have around €10k in the bank and can afford to take a six month break, you should think very carefully about moving. If you survive 6 months, you will be looking at becoming fiscal residents (by default) and all the bureaucratic hassle that goes with that (tax returns, foreign asset declarations)

The unemployment rate in Spain is around 24%. In the area you mention it is around 30% with up to 36% in Malaga province. Same with the Costa Blance with Murcia around 36% as well.

There are millions of Spaniards getting €1000 a month but they will get free healthcare and probably have housing sorted (big families in some houses with 3 generations not being unusual). Plus they speak Spanish as well.

€1500 a month would be the minimum if you have to pay healthcare and rent as well. Sorry, but there simply aren't the employment opportunies near the southern coasts.

Now, there are thousands of foreigners working along the coasts. Outside of minimum wage jobs, the ones I have come across either work for themselves or speak fluent Spanish.

IMO, not a good idea to move here unless you have the means to support yourself or a special skill that you can offer but, even then, you would need a good working knowledge of Spanish.

Sorry to be so negative but a realistic view is necessary.

More people finishing Universidad are leaving Spain then living here as there are no jobs for them, main area they are going are Germany and the U.K, but even in Germany part of settling there is they MUST have german lessons to speak the lingo.

Better off as others have said is work on the coast and high ex pat communitys, but sorry you will be with the Hundreds and Hundreds in the same boat. It´s not the same as it was 11 years ago when i came here.

Daughter at uni here in Spain, and though she has been through the school system since the age of 7 i do fear for her when she finishes uni, and she has English ,Valenciana and Spanish, but when they look at a application form and they have a choice between a Spanish person and a Foreign guess who they will pick ¿ and rightly so look after your own first.
