Hi

Yes, very normal and common place. It is a legal requirement to provide ID when signing a rental contract and for us Brits the passport is all we have.

Dumpman,  just to emphasis what Team GB said.

The ONLY legal ID Brits have in Spain is their ORIGINAL passport.  Not a copy,   unless that copy is authorised by the British Consul or by Passport Office.

Having said that, on a day to day basis many people will accept other documents, but that is ether because they are being accommodating, or more likely because they do not know the law.  However if you go to sign a document before a notary, to a court, the police etc. unless you take your passport you may find that anything is not accepted.

If a landlord let's his property out without the proper documents he is a fool liability falls on the landlord for all the bills the tenant ows and a hefty fine the laws are in place across Europe itse to stop money laundering and protect the public from shite tenant's that want to live for free ie not pay any bills or rent then move on to the next mug landlord that doesn't no them from Adam hence taking passport details /Bank account details and so on.
