Hello

My wife and I are planning to get the car ferry to Santander next week  to spend a couple of weeks touring the Basque country . We  had also planned to visit some friends living in France (Pau)!  Although France has stopped entry from UK except for "essential reasons", their government website seems to suggest that  "foreign nationals" can enter France coming from EU countries, so I am wondering if the border is fully open between Spain and France  and if we can drive freely into France and back into Spain !?!? Any local intel would be really helpful.

Really.. are you sure you want to go walk about in a country that is on the UK's amber list .. you will have two weeks holiday and then two weeks in isolation when you get back to the UK...why are you not taking the UK government's advice and just stay at home until it's safe to travel.

Thanks for the advice windtalker, but I was just hoping to get a simple answer to a simple question: is the road border between Spain and France open?

Providing a person is travelling legally within COVID laws and rules, it is their own personal choice and not that of others.

Yes, you can cross over from Spain to France but you will need to carry a negative covid test PCR  carried out less than 72 hours before crossing, that's it.

A BOE (official state bulletin) published today states that travel across borders (by whatever means, land sea or air) must have one of the following:
Certificate showing receipt of both vaccines at least 2 weeks before.
Certificate of acceptable Covid test
Certificate of recovery from Covid

For coming into Spain, a QR code must be obtained by completing an FCS (health control form) and all those over 6 years of age must have one.

This is for citizens of all countries including EU countries (except for a few exceptions) and will take effect from Monday 7th June.

Of course, each country can impose its own restrictions so you'd need to check with the French gov sites to see if anything is different.

Edited. Those certificates will not be required when entering UK as it is one of the countries that is not on the at risk ones. France, however, is on the at risk list.
