I'm interested to get the opinion & advice from others re paying tax in Spain. I am resident in Ireland with completion of an apartment in CDS soon. It is for investment so I need to rent it as much as possible. There is a double taxation agreement with Ireland and I am trying to work out my tax liabilities.

At the time of buying (2005) my lawyer in Spain and Independent Legal advisor both mentioned that people did not generally pay income tax on rental income and the Spanish government did not pursue the issue as they did not want to have a negative impact on the market.

I'm not sure how tru this is now 2 years later but would like to get feedback.  I've heard there is an income tax of 25% on the income. Can you deduct costs or is this on the gross amount ?

To add to JeanSis's comments, tennants in Spain also have to complete a tax return.

They have to list their landlord on the form and the amount of rent they pay.

So be aware those of you who think they can avoid paying the correct tax on your rentals!
