Hi Gail again,
In your very first post you said "I have been wanting to move to Spain for a few years" so I wonder where you presumably holidayed in Spain to make that decision.
You really should go out to different areas to see how YOU like them as what one person prefers is not necessarily what you'd want. We all prefer our own areas.
I'm just outside Guardamar, which is on the seafront about 2.5km from my door. It's a great town. Quesada is a 10 minute drive inland from us, as is Benijofar, Formentera & Rojales. You can walk from Benijofar into Rojales & Formentera & you'll find many members have & are buying here as it's so easy to get around. In San Miguel there are lots of ex pats too. Almeria is a couple of hours drive south of Torrevieja area. Murcia is around an hour.
Here's a map to help you place the towns mentioned. From Guardamar to Torrevieja along the N332 coast road it's probably 5-6 miles to give you an idea of the scale.

We want somewhere that is quiet but near schools etc..

Hi Gail,
I live in Algorfa, i chose this area personally because of the facilities for my children and the great access to the motorway access for work purposes.
It is abouit 20 mins inland and the school is one of the best for miles around.
The town also offers after school clubs and sports for the children and of course the adults ie spanish lessons etc......
I also chose the area at the time because the prices were better value and you dont get so much of a holiday enviroment away from the coast,as in you get permanent neighbours.
The school bus picks up 100 metres from my front door so we can see it coming from the garden!!
price wise you can still get a 3 bed 2 bath detached villa for approx 210,000€ with room for a pool in the garden, also being in the orchard gives you a feel for the open spaces although we are only 5 minues from the busy shopping town.
although i have been in the housing game for along time i still had to make an educated decision regarding location and schooling,i am quite lucky that i trust my own judgement.
You will probably find, as most do,that your childrens needs will influence your decison more than anything else plus obviously the ability to find work to provide for them.
Good luck on your journey.
Regards
Georgia

Hi everyone,
Me and my husband have decided we are going to visit Spain in the Autumn when the kids are on school half term and possibly stay in Algorfa or surrounding areas, I have looked on a holiday let site and there are loads of villas and apartments in Algorfa and it sounds like a nice area, while we are there we can look at other areas also

Hello Gail, all the places you previously mentioned are in the alicante region, we know them well as we also had a lot of homework to do they are all very english and you could get away without having to speak to much spanish. We wanted something a bit more spanish ourselves and ended up finding a place called finca parcs which is just outside of murcia. The area is very beautiful with rivers and lakes nearby and friendly villages and towns and everything else you need, it takes just over half an hour to get to the centre of murcia and all the new big shopping malls. There is a lovely school in the village that sounds perfect for your children, i think the website is www.fincaparcs.com but im sure if you just google fincaparcs lots of information will pop up. I hope that you and your family find what you are looking for. Best Wishes Katie

Hi Gail again
Can I suggest you maybe book accommodation in Benimar, Benijofar, which, as I told you before, is well placed for Rojales & Formentera. There are many cafes, restaurants, shops etc in Benimar itself plus Benijofar is a town a few mins walk in one direction & Rojales, a town a few mins walk in the other direction. Rojales has a thriving market on Thursdays, Benijofar has a one street market on Wednesdays. I think for a holiday, combined with property searching, you'll enjoy it there.
Visit Guardamar on a Wednesday for its market in town centre around the town hall area. Great atmosphere with cafes amongst stalls so you can watch the world go by. There's a night market at bottom of street, past the side of town hall every night after 7pm too. Loads of cafes & restaurants around this area.
Go to Almoradi on a Saturday as their market is extensive. Sit outside Cafe Vienna for coffee & a great sandwich/baguette/panini served with crisps & coleslaw (Two Scottish couples now own it). Cafe Vienna is down the street (market stalls down the street too) right opposite the church steps in the square.
Algorfa is very spread out. It is not too far from the other places I mentioned so you'll be there from Benijofar area in 10 mins if that.
Plenty to whet your appetite for moving to that area. (Let Georgia take you to look at some properties. He works for Rightmove Espana, estate agents in Guardamar main street).

Hi More,
Some great suggestions there more, and yes the markets are good but as an extra gail i would suggest trying to visit as many places that would you would use on an normal working day as possible.
For example visit a couple of schools,if you speak to any of the teachers they will show you around the school and let you know about class sizes etc,do they run a bus or is it easy to walk to from where you are looking, whwere is the nearest doctors, dentist, bank, gym, clubs etc etc....
The mistake people sometimes make is concentrating on the holiday/fun part of the area when the real research is about the things you will NEED rather than where the nearest aquapark is.
Markets are important and a great way of Spanish lifestyle but you will find yourself going there to buy your fruit and veg for the week rather than shopping for shoes and handbags.
I am not knocking mores post(she knows me better than that)but keep your feet planted firmly on the ground and your eyes wide open, write a wish list in order of importance and stick to it,i have had people turn up with lists of twenty things on and in reality they have all been the wrong way around.
Ask Crooksy about her list when she came over!!! it was like the magna carta!!!!! but it works!!!!

Hi Georgia. I was pointing out some things of interest for Gail to look at whilst she & her family were holidaying too. (I pushed her onto you, be kind to More today. ) You are right in all you say, as usual.
I'm sure Gail will mull over all we all say & make informed decisions.

Hiya Gail We have had two properties in the area where some of the previous posters have mentioned for a number of years now, also known as the Vega Baja area, back then it was the real Spain, since the introduction of the motorway it has become little England over the past five years, english pubs, irish pubs, fish and chips, english supermarkets, bingo and quiz nights etc etc etc, if this is what you are looking for then look no more you have found the perfect area, however if its the real spain you are looking for then I think you may have to look a little bit more further afield, we have now found our little piece of the real Spain again, not sure how long it will be before the above mentioned also finds its way to us, for this reason Im not going to mention the location but if you would like to know more please feel free to PM me. Hubby has been out for a stroll to buy lottery tickets for tonight as it's a double rollover, plus a TV guide, from local shop. It's been ok so far generally, we get to go out together more which is great & whilst it's quiet too.

No chippy in sight there at the moment but aren't there plans for a big Urb closeto Algorfa due to the Finca Golf Course going PGA soon ?
Just something I read somewhere, hopit'snot right but could that be the reason for the Motorway ?

Hi Acapulco,
There are big plans to extend La Finca as they are vying for the Spanish open, this will not effect the village as the project is out lined for the golf course and behind.
This project also includes the land where Masa currently have their concrete factory, again a good few km's from the village.
The motorway has been there for quite a while now and runs about 5km from Algorfa itself, in saying that the motorway is about 200 miles long running from the north to the south of the region so i cant see it being put in purely for the sake of Algorfa.
Like every area it is expanding but at least they are doing it in the right areas and providing infrastructure.
Algorfa itself is very highly sort after by the Spanish,i bought a plot of land in the village a few years ago,i recently looked at a parcela for sale in the village it was 550m2 agood size plot for a detached house,it currently has a hut and a few chickens running around on it,the asking price is 330,000€!! just for the plot, areasonable size house on this would make the total price of nearly 500,000€!
It is still very much real Spain but is also surrounded by Urbs so you can have the best of both worlds if you wish.

Torrevieja is a main city and Murcia is another. They are not particularly far from each other. There are 2 hospitals in the Torrevieja area, Torrevieja itself and San Jaime. There is also a predominantely, Spanish hospital in my town (Orihuela), called Vega Baja.
If you google schools in Murcia you will get a few coming up. El Limonar School is a private bilingual school.
Murcia is lovely, they also have a new shopping mall which is massive on the outskirts Nueva Condomina.
We live about 20 mins from Murcia, there are lots of surrounding villages and towns Murcia too.
Hope this helps.
