"...but what comes next???"
An extended stay at Alhaurin, at Juan Carlos's pleasure, as they say! We'll be in good company - http://www.typicallyspanish.com/news/publish/article_3500.shtml This article is a bit out of date of course, I couldn't find a more recent one quickly. I think the judge mentioned in this case is now in there with the rest of them!

You know the old saying, you don't get anything for nothing, well that applies to banking too, although in the U.K. we're lucky to get free banking foreign banks do not carry the same privelege.

I didn't say that we don't pay charges.......................I said there is no such thing as a free lunch......................we know what the charges are and pay them. We closed our euro off shore account cos it seemed daft since when you transfer sterling you get the rate offered on that day..................if you don't like it don't do it that day.
I'm not sure what you meant by 'I know I'm not part of the crowd but.......................' lets keep it nice and friendly.

Not sure why it was edited, but I'm going to tread more carefully from now on! I didn't see anything particularly offensive about it - I just didn't understand it. Maybe there's a bigger picture I'm not seeing.
Anyway, back on topic(ish) apparently if you want to send money to the USA now, you have to sign some sort of declaration as to the purpose of the transfer etc. Not entirely surprising I guess. But it just made me wonder (because I haven't done it for a while) is it harder to transfer money to/from Spain / UK since 9/11, Madrid and 7/7 etc? Are there any more checks in place? I know it's not as easy as it once was to just change large wads of foreign currency without raising more than an eyebrow or two. Any thoughts anyone?

We transferred £4000 to our solicitor in Spain last week via the bank. All they wanted was the SWIFT number, IBAN, account number and recipient's details, easy as that.
When we attended the MRI exhibition we spoke to HiFX where we asked for further information. We hadn't committed to anything, only asked for more details. When checking my Experian file the other week, HiFX had run a credit check and placed a money laundering enquiry marker on my credit file. Needless to say, I am not amused and gave them no permission to do this. I am taking it up with the data protection commissioner now.
I opened an account with XE this week. They asked for a scan of a signed document produced online. They also made an arrangement to telephone me last night to go through some security checks and to find out where I am to transfer funds and how often. I now need to send them a scan of a bank statement (less transactions) and a scan of my passport before they open the account.

Hi Mark
Can you tell me what an Experian file is? And how you check it?

Experian is a credit reference agency.
Your credit report will detail all your applications for credit, mortgages etc. It also details any late payments, arrears & defaults.
It covers your addresses over the previous 6 years & also picks up any joint applications.
Most major financial organisations use credit check facilities before agreeing any loans, credit cards etc.
www.experian.co.uk gives you the opportunity to view your credit file & you have a legal right to challenge & have amended any incorrect information.
Hope that helps.

You can either send the company £2 with your name and list of addresses for the last 6 years, or you can take advantage of the free 30 day trial they offer. You need to provide payment details, but so long as you cancel before the 30 days, no payment is taken.
