The trouble with IM is that it is as it states an 'Instant Messenger' service, which would only be between two members. In other words 'Private chat'.
We want to encourage people to use this forum as the amount of knowledge from it's founders and members is immeasruable, and to share knowledge is power! (who said that)
However quite a lot of posts go significantly 'Off Topic', which could put people of using the forum.
Hence If we have a lice 'chat' area, we can have the chit-chat flying around aswell as help others by posting in the forum 'On Topic' and do the 'Off Topic' stuff in the chat area?

Yes thats true and most of time when it goes off topic its ok, somtimes its wild, but thats the fun of them and you can always strre to topic back. The real issue I would have is that there wouldnt be a recorded thread of chat to follow.
