Buying a car in spain

We have a holiday home so are in Spain (Mojacar) quite alot during the year. Car hire is costing us an absolute fortune. Can anyone provide any advice on buying a small cheapish but reliable car and leaving it outside an apartment (which is quite safe). I have only just started looking at this but have no idea where to look to buy a car - spanish or english dealers, and the annual costs involved e.g. insurance, road tax, mot, breakdown assistance etc etc.
Any help would be appreciated
