Stinginess is Killing the Costas

Has anybody else heard of this new rule from the Spanish authorities stating that you have to have a non residency certificate?  Apparently you have to either get one from the Spanish Consulate in England or from the Orihuela Costa town hall, which is near La Zenia.  A person from our bank Cajamar, phoned us one evening in England and said this needs to be done by 15th September or our account will be blocked.  We bought off-plan in 2005 and every year since we have signed a document in our solicitors to say we are non-residents.  We have also paid for the first time this year non-residency taxes.  Our lawyer in Spain said it is a new ruling and something the police require,  They are looking into whether they can obtain a certificate for us or whether we have to do it ourselves. Mick & Ann, Block 3.

We are in block 1.  The non-residency issue has been pretty comprehensively covered under 'non-resident bank accounts' on the general site, but not conclusively.  We are with CAM bank and have heard nothing, although we do have a local Lawyer / Fiscal Representative who should take care of all these issues.  I have e-mailed him on the subject, but as yet heard nothing.  I will post when I get a reply.  I would be pretty cross if they did try to freeze our account and have already said that if they did such a thing, I would do whatever was neccessary to get it unfrozen and then transfer the quite considerable sum (which earns no interest) back to the UK!

You say this is covered in other threads, but when I do a search for ''non-resident bank accounts'  nothing comes up. I am interested in what you have to say on this matter as I did read about it in the Costa Blanca News but we opened our Spanish bank account in the UK and it said something about bank accounts opened in Spain...

Hi, I have a vague recollection that a non residance certificate was required by Lloyds TSB Spain when we opened our account, but we did not deal with anything I think the solicitor must of done it, but I am not100% sure!.

I have just checked our bank account and we were charged 15.03 euros each for a certificate of non residence in May when we opened our account.

Hi Christine, You are quite right. Non residents have to complete a form, supplied by the bank, every 2 years. Our bank usually sends this to us in the UK.

Hi Irene, Go into the 'non resident bank account' thread on the main EOS site. About 2 weeks ago people were discussing this as someone had posted that she had had her account frozen! Morerosado had emailed her bank a couple of times and has posted the replies. As everything else in Spain the answer is not clear cut but the general consensus is that as long as the forms have been completed and returned and that you have not applied for residency you should be alright.

That 's as much as I know I'm afraid. We are just hoping to have access to our money when we go over at the end of next month!!!! I'm sure that our bank manager would notify us if they were about to freeze our account-wouldn't he?
