Hi Everyone
First I will introduce myself my name is Ann and this is the first time I've have used this, so forgive me if I'm not using this right. Mike and I completed on our apartment in block 3 in May last year. We have been out three times since then, including spending Christmas, and have enjoyed our time there. We have some nice neighbours and are pleased with our apartment.
We feel sorry for those people who have had their properties broken into and this has made us put a grill on our front door. It does give you a little more security. Although I have been told if someone is determined to get in even that will not stop them.
We were reading a post the other day where somebody mentioned about a permanent washing line area. That is a very good idea, although we think it would be better to get washing lines installed permanently not the roll away type as these would not be as strong and could need repairing too often. If we had say a number of lines i.e down one end of block 3, and also block 5 if they wanted to that is, this would leave the main area by the side of the pool clear. This could be a oneoff payment shared between 3,4 & 5. Obviously block 4 has the pool on it, so would not have the room but people in this block would be able to use the lines on 3 & 5. What are your comments?
Mike & Ann S

Hi Ann & everyone.
Now see what you've done - you've set me off again! I absolutely hate the bits of washing lines that are currently sprouting on the roof. I think they are dangerous - if there's no washing or pegs on them and they are a bit droopy, someone could hang themselves on them - they are also very unsightly.
I have already proposed fixed washing lines so let's hope it is agreed!

Forgive me for poking my nose in Irene, but have you considered the twirly washing lines that we use in the UK? Or do you dislike them as well! They could be taken in when not in use and stored in the TV/storage room on the roof. The bases could also be duel purpose and also house sun umberellas! I have one on my patio (in Spain) and they work fine.
Just a thought,
Gloria

Hi Gloria
Although I hate all washing lines I realise they are necessary. Thinking through your suggestion of whirly lines - who will be responsible for putting them out and taking them in? Do you think that would happen?
I think what is there at present is highly dangerous. My sister who is quite tall nearly decapitated herself on one line; it didn't have any washing on it and wasn't particularly visible until it caught under her chin! I'd like to avoid an accident as well as tidy up what is a real eyesore. I like sitting on the roof in the sun, but don't like other people's washing flapping around me.
What I propose is not to eliminate washing lines altogether, but provide one or more designated area/s with fixed lines and possibly some screening around them. That way the roof looks tidy, there's a facility for everyone to use and we're all happy!
Have a good day everyone

I take your point, Irene.
I would have thought that the person using the line would be responsible for puting it out and taking it in after use. I do that with mine in the UK. BUT how does one ensure that I don't know, i'm afraid. Trust , I suppose! I'm probable too naieve. I know I was disgusted last year to find that some dispicable person had let their dog foul the roof on Block 1 and hadn't cleaned it up. Can you believe that? I don't think the Spanish ever clear up after their dogs and you really have to watch where you tread. That's one of the things I really hate! Mike and I swept the roof whilst we were there but I don't suppose many people would consider doing that. It didn't take long and it was much better not to sit among the old water bottles and other debris left by the builder!

Hi Gloria
How do you know it was a Spanish dog owner?
... and I don't know when you were there, but who says that the builders left the debis? One of the owners in our block kindly deposited their old sofa on the roof! Luckily it got moved but I don't know who was responsible and who kindly disposed of it.
The roof should be kept clean as part of the overall cleaning contract - once again something our elusive administrators should be watching.
I know we'll sort all these things out amicably once we have some firm 'rules' and we'll all be one big happy family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We're planning to move out there permanently sometime later this year with a bit of luck and the wind behind us - can't wait! I'm fed up with working as it upsets my social plans (ie. to do nothing at my leisure)
Regards
Irene

Hi Irene and Alan
When you are next over please let us know my wife is the vice president of the Princesa Elena apartments (the white building). It might help you to meet with the president and vice president of another apartment block to find out what you can and can not do according to the spanish horizontal law

Hi Brian
Whilst it would be lovely to meet your wife, I am not the president of our community and I don't want to tread on our Jim's toes because he's doing his best with the handicap of our administrators.
We're over shortly and I'll send you a private e-mail to give you dates.
Thanks
Irene

Hi Irene,
Obviously i don't KNOW that it was a Spanish owner but I do know that the Spanish are not good at clearing up after their dogs! Also we only have 5 British owned appt. in our block and I have met all of them and no one has a dog. Quite a few of the Spanish do have a dog or even dogs so I suppose that I just assumed. Not that I really think the nationality of the dog/owner is really relevant . It's just disgusting and one of my pet hates. The UK has really improved in this respect over the last 10 years or so. Probable the prospect of a fine has helped!!!
Glad to hear that you are looking forward to being a lady of leisure! I have been that for the last 3 years but I must admit that I do get a bit bored in Spain! I miss my girl friends and the lunches and coffee mornings. I must say that it's good to be back in the UK for a while!!!!!!

Yes, I'm sure that we can be friends, Irene. I honestly didn't want to imply that i didn't find people friendly because that wouldn't be true. We met some lovely people whilst we were in Spain. I think that I must be more a creature of habit than I expected! I went into town (Canterbury) on tuesday and loved everything about it, yes even the tourists!!!!! I think that might change but at the moment I'm just enjoying being back in Canterbury and even the weather is co-operating!
There are lots of good things about Spain but I'm not sure that I could ever live there. That probable says more about me than Spain!

... and I didn't read it that way either Gloria. I know what you mean about the tourist buzz though, because I live in Windsor and I absolutely love hearing all the accents, languages and all the camera-laden tourists gawking at Windsor Castle that I tend to take for granted.
However, I also love the slower pace of life and the sun and the Spanish people in our little village, so I absolutely can't wait to get there.
Let's hope we meet soon.
Irene
