I have been confused over what to do re furnishing our apartment - the furniture packs seem quite expensive and basic so have been considering buying in the UK and shipping over.  What do others think? Is there anyone willing to accept delivery unpack etc? and put up curtains rails cabinets? Is it worth buying white goods in the UK?

Mandy

mandy

there are plenty of posts on this subject with people doing all sorts of different things, we however done 50/50 , except for the hassle we would have had in changing plugs or buying euro adapters, i wish we had bought everything (or 95%) in the uk, the reasons being, knowing where to go and what to buy, without getting lost, cost, and quality of goods, with the euro being quite poor respectively i would, weigh  up all the options as i am sure there are plenty of people who had a pleasant experience trooping  around thader, ikea and the likes,

best of luck

Hi Mandy

I looked at all the option before we bought and the bottom line is, its horses for courses. With the exchange rate as it is at the moment it is worth considering buying in UK and shipping over, this is also a good idea as you know were to go in UK, but obviously the cost of shipping has to be added to the overall cost. I wouldn’t buy white goods in UK as if they go wrong they will not come out to repair, so I would bur them locally, I used a shop called Real Domestic Appliances, good price and delivered and installed in 2 days. I personally wouldn’t buy a furniture pack, as I don’t think they work out cheaper and we didn’t see a pack that had just what we wanted. We bought our big items from a shop called DFS (Direct Furniture Spain) nothing to do with DFS UK but they just had what we wanted at a cost that we considered OK plus service was good, staff helpful not pushy and delivery men unpacked and installed everything. Small appliances and white goods you can also buy at the big supermarkets and Pots, Pans and soft furnishing you can get from IKEA.

Hope this helps

Phil

Hi

We bought almost everything from the UK and shipped over (we used a guy called Allan for our shipping - very reasonable - we can supply details if required).

We have worked out that we have saved around £2,000 (inc shipping) and we have been able to have a good shop around in the UK and get some nice bargains! We looked in depth at all options and we have certainly saved ourself some money. Whatever option you choose, it's stressful!!

We bought our bedding (quilts, covers, pillows etc) and towels etc from Primark. Wilkinson is great for all your kitchen stuff, or The Range if you have one local. Some things are really expensive in Spain and you will have the additional stress of finding the shops (and getting lost), and then the exchange rate is so poor! We found Ikea to be hopeless to be honest, apart from lighting and blinds (but perhaps we were fussy?). Then you've got to hope that they've got what you want in stock when you're there! If you need any other pointers about where to get some bargains, let me know and I will point you in the right directions - just spend the last couple of months going through the same and very happy to help someone if it makes it easier for them!

We came over to Spain in April and intended to get some of the furniture there. We did buy our garden furniture from UK Supplies in Mazzaron and we got our white goods from Real Domestic Appliances. It is not worth getting electrical stuff in UK and shipping (we spoke to consumer direct and to various manufacturers and were told that the guarantees are only valid in country of purchase) so if anything goes wrong you will be stuck (as happened when we came over - we rented someone else's apartment and the DVD player have packed up and the guy had to take back to the UK so we had no player for most of the week!)

Hope this has been of some help. Please PM me if you want any contacts etc.

Regards

Rachel
