The schedule of works posted online by the airport operators shows
that it should be operational in April 2011, as long as there are no
unexpected delays. It will be finished approx 4 months before this
but everthing has to be tested before they get the opening licence.
This is a firm date now for the opening/ 1st flights

Sorry but I have been informed that there is a delay until 2014 because of economic downturn. This came from a businessman involved with airport parking who said executive of San Javier told him. So nothing official but I believe this guy has an ear to the ground.

That would be disappointing but understandable. I understand that when Corvera is fully operational it will host 24 hour flights. That will make a difference to getting over to CdA as late flights and unsociable hour flights are often so much cheaper.
Yesterday I read a really worrying article about Spains financial situation and the looming mega unemployment problem complicated by the lack of any other industry( than building) that could improve Spains projected continued down turn. That sort of article does make me wonder if Corvera will actually get finished and open. The dropping numbers of tourists statistically says they dont need this other airport now and Alicante and San Javier both had improvements either ongoing or planned anyway. They estimate a huge downturn in rental income and in the service industries that support the tourist trade from 2010. There was further information about over development and the push to house nationals in what has previously been seen as holiday accomodation thereby changing the face of resorts such as ours. At present there are over 1,700,000 built or semi completed properties in Spain with no hope of the expected purchasers buying them up and they are looking at housing associations complusary purchasing properties at minimal cost, to house the growing number of unemployed and potentially homeless immigrants brought into the country to staff the building trade. Whilst most of that info must be conjecture or somewhere up in the ether as idea's it seems likely that huge financial committments such as Corvera, new shopping malls, Hotel complexes etc may be rethought.

I agree you can see some photos on the bottom page of this link to an article in August.
They are hoping that now they have the final funding, works may even finish ahead of schedule.
http://www.theleader.info/article/18930/murcia-airport-to-open-next-year/
When Corvera is opened, Alicante and San Javier are going to suffer greatly. The planned expansion for Alicante which goes back to 2000 and costing in excess of Ten million euros will prob not now go ahead as this was planned before the existence of Corvera.
The landing fees are going to be 20 % less than the other airports and closer to all the main resort in Costa Calida.
This article is from August 2009
Work on the new Murcia Airport is already in its final stages, nearing completion and work to complete both the terminal and control tower. This was recently stated Councilor Public Works and Regional Planning Executive of the Region of Murcia, José Ballesta, who was keen to stress that they are meeting all the deadlines in the project to build new airport in Murcia.
The new Murcia airport, also known as Corvera Airport has been in recent weeks received attention from some regional collective, who have applied for the same airport, the official name of Juan de la Cierva, a tribute to the historic born engineer from Murcia. Despite the good progress of work of this José Ballesta adviser has not hidden his desire to speed up work of this crucial infrastructure for the region.

I'd seen that August 2009 article too and it does sound hopeful. Alicante has a massive new building on site as well so they are clearly going ahead with some improvements. Maybe Corvera will be a bit delayed but its not being built just for CdA or the tourist trade its for the whole region so there has to be many reasons it was even considered in the first place which will hoepfully push it forward.
Tony- I read the article I think you are referring to regarding Spains financial situation and its true there weren't many positives in it (online Telegraph) but you can just as easily find other articles which do have more hope for the future- so the truth will be somewhere in bewtween. However, I have to say talk about housing associations changing the face of resorts 'such as ours' is scaremongering. Those articles were online about this time last year and referred to backrupt stock in coastal resorts and suggested that this may be of dealing with several problems with one stroke- Spanish govt housing associations buying up some bankrupt stock to replenish local housing would help ease debts some property developers had, would clear some of the ghost developements, would provide low cost housing for locals unable to get on the property market and provide stimulus for the retail trade (DIY, furniture/soft furniture suppliers, white goods suppliers) Many Spanish people found it hard to get on the property ladder as developers price everything high for the second home trade. PW and others disappeared off our tv screens last year as they turned their advertising back home to encourage the purchase of property on their developements 'a first home at the right price'. its very unlikely housing associations would buy up swathes of PW properties because they are not bankrupt stock going for a song and they also carry a community fee which is considered fairly high. Whilst we will see more Spanish families living full time on the resorts- which is a good thing and makes the resorts less Spanish-lite- most still see them as an expensive place to live.

Also forgot to add that from the article from August it stated
Ballesta, who was speaking at the presentation of the Road Safety Plan 2009-2010, explained that the future airport is up and visible and that he "glimpsed" check-in counters and boarding,

As to who will fly in there, nobody has any idea as yet but they will of course be chasing the budget and charter airlines especially as Corvera doesn't plan on having to operate within restricted operating hours. Therefore, it will depend on the incentives being offered to the likes of Messrs. O'Leary and Stelios etc.

I may be wrong but I am sure that I can recall an article stating that San Javier would retain the Easyjet / Ryan air business based on cost.
Corvera would become an International hub with trans atlantic flights and long haul destinations catered for.

Hi Folks
Like truckers I hope we are not on the flight path
When flying into san javier you fly over house and are quiet low at this point, and I really don't think half an hour away makes much odds, for a plane that is no big deal

I don't know if the plans have changed much over the years, but the original runway plan had the southern line of the runway heading between Hacienda de Alamo and Fuente Alamo - this would put it on a straight line bearing between Camposol and Mazzaron. Obviously the flights will deviate from the straight line, and some may head towards Condado, but they should be quite high by the time they get to us. I will post a picture of the original plans, showing the direction and proximity of the main towns.
