NIE Application

No doubt this has been raised before but what is the latest information on NIE Applications.

How do you go about applying?  

Does this still require a trip to Alicante or is there a police office dealing with applications nearer San Cayetano?

Or can this be done from the U.K.?

All hints and tips appreciated.

We went to Cartagena with our solicitor.  There was a really long queue but our solicitor just took us straight through, it only took about 10/15 mins.

 You do not need to go to Alicante and indeed should not as San Cayetano is in Murcia and so the NIE should be issued in Murcia region or you will find this can cause problems when you need to produce it. Your Solictor should be able to do it for you without you being there.

The NIE number can be obtained in the UK, depending on which, Spanish Consulate you are near.  Unless things have changed drastically myself and my wife got our in Manchester at no cost.  Forms can be found on the web and full instructions.  If we can do it, it can't be that difficult.  If you require further send me an email and I'll try and locate the links.
