Just a quick update
I drove by the Airport today and they were testing the runway lights, presumably in preparation for the test flights to begin as scheduled in April.

A little bit more information from the horses mouth as I have more people voewing today for rentals when the airport opens
The customer assistance and baggage handlers, who are some of the staff that have the option to move, have been told that site training at the airport for them will be in early September, for operations October/November
The agreement is that existing service suppliers are having to rebid for contracts and staff will either move with the the existing company, or be automatically employed by the new companies

Hi All,
After speaking to the Managing Director of Corvera Airport (or Region of Murcia International Airport as it will be known) on Tuesday of last week I can confirm that the test flights will be taking place next week.
So keep your eyes peeled and no reporting UFOs in the area...
Regards

For those of you who noticed a plane circling over the new airport last night between 8.00pm and 9.00pm I can confirm that this was the plane doing the test flights.
In essence it is a plane full to the brim with electronics to monitor all the radar facilities radio, communication and automatic systems between the ground and aircraft.
Too early for results as yet but once I hear i'll let you know, however as far as progress is concerned this is a very important part of the paper exercise to get all the permissiond in place.
Regards
Tom

Don't know if any truth, but this unconfirmed report has been circulating today:
Corvera Airport "on hold" (The story will have changed by next week)
An anonymous source at the Ministry of Public works has confirmed that developments at Corvera International Airport are currently "on hold".
The opening of the airport, privately owned by Aeromur and to be managed and operated by state-owned AENA, is believed to have been blocked for "military reasons".
The unnamed source went on to say how, aside from economic reasons, the operation of the airport has been suspended at the eleventh hour due to the importance that the Murcia area, has in offering security for Spain, Western Europe and NATO in the event of a nuclear threat.
Although this has still to be officially confirmed by government sources, if done so it will bring questions as to why this issue has only been addressed at this late stage in the proceedings and after millions of euros in private and public investment.
Hopefully there will be some more information out soon.

Hi All, Can anyone throw any light on this latest Airport rumour ? Is Corvera Airport going to become an unused white elephant or is it going to open in early 2013 like the majority of the latest press reports are saying ?

Hi Simon & Mark,
There is some truth in the report in so much as the latest is that the airport are back in negotiations with the Military at San Javier to try and re negotiate more flexible flight paths.
My contact tells me he is up and down to Madrid on a regular basis for meetings but as usual in Spain things are going slowly, he has up to now been optimistic that at least some flights would be able to use Corvera by the autumn of this year but now he is not so sure.
If I hear anything else I'll let you know.

Just to add to this certainlt the airport has not, as the rumour puts it been put on hold or stopped as the construction workers and new air traffic tram continue to work normally towards their target dates for some flights in October, so still pnety of vans in and out of the site
Yiu wonder if politically with everything that is going on in Spain if these rumours are started deliberately

I for one have nothing to gain from rumour mongering, I just want to be kept up to date with what is happening, good and bad. I don't think the person I heard it from has anything to gain either as he owns a business, deendent on tourism in Mojacar and would welcome the airport with its' potential new clientelle.

There are quite horrible rumours on other forums/threads about the Airport opening not just being delayed, but possibly never happening at all.
ls there a shred of truth in any of them?
Thanks.

Hi Tony & Kim,
Although you can never say anything for certain over here, I can assure you that the rumours you refer to are exactly that, rumours! There have been no updates since my last post, other than the MD and other members of senior management have now moved from the porta-cabins into the office complex within the main terminal.
They are still re-negotiating the flightpath/use of airspace with the military for more flexibility, and everything continues as normal.

There is no mention of any this with Murcia news so looks like yet another spurious rumour is being spread. At least it seems more positive news is about Paramount still progressing so will keep hoping that will work out eventually

I have not seen any other official media reporting this "story".
I think we have to look at tumbit.com, and think of the possible reasons they may have had for publishing this "story" on the big world wide web........??? Now I wonder what that may have been???
