Visiting Murcia City

We plan to visit Murcia when we are over later in the year. Going to be brave and get the train from Alhama but where do we head for once there? We have a habit of arriving at a place, guide book in hand and wandering aimlessly about taking in sights but finding that all and sundry later say to us 'did you see....?' and we didn't!

I've read that the Cathedral is worth seeing because it has such a high bell tower and there are plenty of museums and that the centre is pedestrianised so easy to get around but beyond that... I do know that in the summer most residents (if they can afford it) move out of the cities because of the heat but we're talking of just doing an afternoon so hopefully will cope.

Any advice appreciated.

Once out of the station, cross over the road and head up the main street which will take you over the river and into the area where there are some shops and the catherdral. One thing we found though is the catherdral seems to close around lunchtime and then not open until later in the evening around tea time so you may want to get there fairly early.

This has happened to us twice so I'm assuming there are standard opening and closing times.

One thing we did find on the walk there from the station was a coffee shop with the best cakes we have tasted for a while. Always worth a visit to give you some energy for the walk into the station.

The train was good from Alhama. Free parking at the station. We did go in March, the trains were every 11min past the hour, this may have changed in April.

A couple of pointers, at the station you have to cross over to the far platform for the Murcia train, pay on the train. euros 3.60(i think) return

Come out the station and walk away from it - going left and then right along the main road, then keep going.

There is a tourist information office in the cathedaral sq, even this was closed from 2 or 2:30 for a couple of hours.

Anyone have advice on what to see besides the Cathedral and a good cake shop? Though the cake shop is good for me!

 A must on a visit to Murcia city is the Casino a short walk from the Cathedral.

Purchase the hand held dictaphone which gives info in english (Few Euros) well worth it to get the history etc.

Fabulous building will so much to see Ballroom, Powder Room, Billiard room with tables with no pockets, fantastic arabasqe architecture, 

Paintings, Sculptures etc.

Originally a Gentlemans club but changed over the years.

A must place to see after the Cathedral.

Hi,I'm going to try this the week after next.

What about getting to the station in Alhama de Murcia?When I go in I drive straight through the first roundabout and park under the police station.

Where is the station in relation to here???

When you get to the main roundabout, turn right and it's one of the turnings on the right. Not sure which one but I think they all end up on a road that runs along the railway lines. Turn left and you will drive straight into the car park.

 Turn right by r bout with fountains  , go past Repsol garage and at r bout with large rusty structure on it  turn right. Go to bottom and follow to left. New Police station on corner . Tickets purchased on train  cross line to go to Murcia .

In murcia take right and look up ahead for catherdral .
