Can people let me know their experiences in getting their NI number. We don't plan to come over to Spain until our house is ready. Originally we were told by our agent that they would take us to the relevant police station to apply along with other people who were signing up at  the same time. I've now received a letter from them indicating that we should be doing this ourselves (going to ring them and get the right information). But in the meatime, I understand that things have changed whereby after applying at the police station you then have to wait approx 10/15 days before you are given the NI number? As anyone applied direct to the Spanish Embassy here in the UK?

You can apply to the Spainsh Embassy in the UK, you willl get an appointment from them. They will tell you what documents to bring.  Once you have your NI Number sent it to your solicitors in Spain, a lot less hassle than doing it in Spain, especially as you dont have an agent to help you.

Hi, I got my NIE number just this week in Alicante, got it Tuesday and completed all papers on Wednesday, apart from the early start it was painless, my agent was through Medsea  estates and looked after us really well........

I've since spoken to our agent MASA and they have confirmed that we will be issued with a temperary NIE number on day one and assuming mortgage/money is sorted out, we would get the keys to our new home on day two. Its sounds like there's a lot of standing, around but all that will soon be forgotten when we get the keys.

We have bought plot No 21, we believe our address will be 42 Calle Jose Sanchez Lozano, hope this helps.

I have plot number no. 28 and i have met chris and julie who have plot no. 26. we are 56 Jose Sanchez Lozano so that means you will be number 48 Jose Sanchez Lozano.  with regard to the NIE number I thought i read somewhere that I needed passports, copies of passports and passport size photos  can anyone advise

Hi Everyone.

I'm thinking of going to the Spanish consulate in London to obtain my NIE number, could anyone else who has done it this way tell me how many weeks it takes from the time you went there to the time you or your solictor recieved your number in the post, as I have read it has taken up to 14 weeks.

Re you NIE number, you have to phone the Spanish Embassy first and make an appointment.   Our son's took 6 weeks.  (son and husband went last summer on the hottest day of the year, got some of his spanish words mixed up and had them laughing!  But they were ok) 

Have you got the form to do it, if you have don't sign it - you will need to do this in person when you get there and it will tell you what you need to take.

But one thing I would advise is go asap.  I'm sure others will post more info.

i got up tight about what i needed. But Medsea estates organised everything. They had all our paperwork already filled out. We met the rep in los Alcazares and he drove to Murcia. There was a large queue and he spoke to the policeman and went went straight to the front. it apparently takes 8 days to get your NIE number this way. he said our numbers will be at the notary when we are completing. it did not cost us anything either.

Thank you for your information, I have contacted the Spanish Embassy regarding the NIE number and they gave me  www.conspalon.org  for the Spainish Consulate, I then went on the web page and it states that they are open from 09.30 - 13.30 Mon - Fri, and with no appointments needed.

So with this information and my NIE form etc, taken from an earlier post from Julie that gives you a link to download the NIE number and also how to fill it in, http://www.idealspain.com/pages/information/MovingToSpain.htm I'm off to London, and hopefully I will get my application in. 

I'll let you know how my adventure went.

Hi All

Went to Spanish Consulate in London yesterday to apply for NIE number and no problems.

It was easy to find, 15 minute walk from Victoria coach station, just off Sloan Square.  Once there, one person in front of us and then it was done,15 mins tops.

There is a new form out, but it almost the same as the old one just 5 parts now instead of 4, and also at the top you have to enter your passport number.

List of things the consulate wanted......

2 forms per person, not signed.

Passports.

Photocopy of passorts.

Copy of our legal contract for house.

A4 envelope per person. (To send form etc  to Madrid police station)

One thing to bear in mind if you don't know, you can't have your NIE number sent back to YOURSELF, so the address in box 5 has to be Spainish, (Lawyer, Estate agent, friend, etc).

They also told us that they don't give a timescale on when you will receive your NIE, surprise, surprise.

And best thing of all, I thought it was £22 for each person, but we didnt pay anything.
