Our family has just returned from our annual summer hol at CDA.
For those who are new to the area, below are a number of off-site activities we would recommend, which hopefully some readers may find of interest:
Spa at Archena - this is a spa with two large heated pools each incorporating jacuzzis, one also has a lazy river. More tranquil than the water park, but worth the 45 min drive - head for Murcia then take motorway towards Albacete. The spa (Balneario de Archena) is signposted from the motorway.
Guns of Mazarron - two massive world war 2 anti shipping guns set high on the cliff tops. Largely undeveloped as a tourist attraction so is free to enter however there are no facilities. Another 45min drive - head for Puerto de Mazarron then follow signs for Isla Plana, carry on along the coast road following signs for La Azohia, but don't take the right turn where signposted instead go straight on and take the next right (E23) keep going along this road until you reach the car park. Its then a short walk along the road to the battery. Beware the road is narrow in places and has many twists and turns, but its worth the trip.
Beach - after visiting the guns and driving down the mountain we spent the rest of the day on the beach at La Azohia. This is our favourite beach (followed closely by Isla Plana) and is worth a trip even without visiting the guns. Many people enjoy a meal while taking in the views at the Antipodean restaurant at the end of the bay.
Horse riding at META - our little girl loved the hour spend grooming, feeding and riding a horse. She is a complete novice and was made very welcome by the owners Liz and Veronica. Only a 10 minute drive, come out of CDA and follow signs for Alhama, at the end of the motorway follow signs for El Palmar. META is on the right on a dirt track just past s massive fruit and veg warehouse.
Caverna Restaurant - This is a specialist steak house, a bit pricey but the sirloin is top quality. The garlic bread is also a unique experience. Directions as above, about 10 mins from the motorway roundabout, on the righthand side of the main road.
Water Park - although there a few water parks within reach of CDA we chose the nearest, Terra Natura/Aqua Natura. This combines a zoo as well as the water park, but to be honest I have never been able to drag the kids off the water rides so have never visited to the zoo. Kids need to be above 120cm to go on most of the rides. The park usually offer free entry if you want to go back again the next day. Follow signs to Murcia, stay on A7 towards Alicante but turn off just after it merges with the A30, signposted Universities, the water park is signposted from there.
Shopping at Thader - large shopping centre with IKEA and Decathlon shops just across the car park. Also impressive food hall and cinema. Further shops, including diy shop Leroy Merlin are also there, just across the bridge over the motorway. Follow directions for waterpark above but stay on A7 motorway a couple more junctions. You will see the signs for the shops telling you where to turn off.
Puerto de Mazarron - no trip to CDA is complete without a stroll down the prom at Port Maz drooling over the boats in the harbour. In August this is full of life as the Spaniards enjoy their holidays. Many restaurants to choose from, our favourites are Viggios (especially seafood paella) and Mama Mia on the new pier.
