Hi all,
With everything we have heard regarding burglaries at DV, we have decided that we would feel happier with patio door locks on our 1st floor apartment. Our keyholder went to fit some for us, but has found a problem - the centre of the doors come out into a V shape, so it is not possible to put a conventional door lock into the centre of the door locking both together, he does not know what sort of lock will hold them both. Have any of you other owners managed to find anything that fits to these doors?
Any suggestions greatfully received!
Many thanks
Michelle

I am out next week and will be looking at this myself.
I was going to fit a centre lock as I have done in my other property. If not possible then:-
Alternatives may be something like a hasp and staple on each door with a padlock, as you only open one door at a time one side could be left locked all the time.
At the top of the door on the inside it may be possible to fit a wedge between the inside door and a bracket fitted to the top of the inner door, this has the same effect as a lock in the middle.
The doors are made by climatic I think, maybe one is made for the job?

Hi Jc1,
In your response to Jeff you say 'this has been done already by someone we both know'. Does that mean you know another owner that has managed to get something to fit their doors? If you do know something that might be useful, please let me know.
Many thanks

Hi Michelle
It does mean that but I am not sure how until i can see and speak with him, and what has confused me is what you have said about the V shape as I too am on 1st floor and where it has been done is ground floor. When I know i will be providing info via this forum and so will Jeff, I am sure.

Hi to all
It is possible to fit surface mounted locks on the inside of the patio doors when shut, wicks diy in the uk have these locks, the only problem is that the lock has to be fitted at either the top or bottom of the frame and in doing so the plastic cover on the frame housing the runner mechanism has to removed/chopped out in order to get a firm flat mounting (not a very good idea but possible) also the lock is held into position by 2no fairly small self tappers screwed into the frame.( could do with 4 but this is not possible ) I have fitted this type of lock however it is better than nothing .We have also fitted bars to both sides of the sliding doors as well one lays in the bottom recess and the other connects to the door handle and is wedged onto the frame of the other door. hope all this is of some help.
Best Regards to all Chris & Chris

I have fitted an additional patio locks and a shutter alarms to my apartment.
Send me a PM for a word file with details and pictures of the locks and alarms, please note I will only send to trusted parties.
So ideally I need your name, email address and ideally a UK land line number.
In return I will send the file and my home number so you can call me if you want to discuss the fitting of the locks etc.

I have posted this information under a few different threads. Today my guests at blk 7 on the 2nd floor were broken into. The thieves apparently in broad daylight broke into an unoccupied (unsold) apartment next door - breaking through the front door, and climbed onto my balcony from the adjacent one! They then crow barred my patio doors open. My guests were probably watched to see when they went out. The thieves broke into the safe and took their valuables. So ground floor flats are not the only ones at risk and someone knows that the safes are useless. BE WARNED.

So sorry to hear your news Ana. I think us owners need to get together and make a formal complaint about security on the site.
Whilst I was in DV recently, noticiably the security guard on the gate was always in place. However there are no security checks as to who he is opening the barrier for, so anyone can come and go as they please. I know this is not an easy one, but I do think there should be some form of security in place, ie someone patrolling the grounds. Does anyone think we should address this. At least if there is a presence of a uniformed person, it may act as a deterent, what do you think?

I have ordered metal bar locks for all the patio doors and windows, they attach to the door to stop it being slid open and fix with a lock and key . They arrive on Saturday from a locksmith up the coast. ( could save him a journey if anyone else is interested) He is Scottish so no language barriers!!.. If anyone is interested please send me an email and ill give his number, I also have a couple of pics so you can get an idea of what they look like...

Here is a copy of the email I sent to Rosa at AEA almost a month ago, so far I have had no reply. Maybe it might help if we all approach AEA either individually or as a group.

Subject: Security problems within Duquesa Village
Hi Rosa,
I am becoming increasingly concerned about the security situation within Duquesa Village.
I understand there have been several burglaries in the last few weeks. All have involved break ins through the terrace doors of ground floor apartments and all have been carried out during the day. I myself have had people climb up onto my terrace using pallets from the building area to scale the wall and I feel it is only a matter of time before we get burgled ourselves.
The only security provision I can see is the guard and barrier at the entrance to the site. However, is this person there to protect the interests of the developer or those of the residents?
Is there anything that can be done to improve the situation as soon as possible?
Is this something that has to be organised by AEA or do we deal with the developer directly? I assume its that of the community and therefore AEA's area of responsibility.
What we need is for a professional security company to take control of the situation as with other developments I have stayed in around the Duquesa Area.
I am not sure what measures can be put in place but as a minimum surely we must have a security guard on duty all day every day including frequent patrols of the development which we are not getting now.
Is this something that is being progressed at all.
Your earliest attention would be most appreciated.
Regards
Steve
