bbbreakfast. hi. i certainly never intended to get into an argument.

" If you pay by debit card (EC-Karte) you must take out the additional Relax insurance which costs 30€ for up to 6 days, with 5€ more per day up to a maximum of 60€ for 28 days. If your car hire is for a longer period the cost is 90€ EXTRA COST"

Rental companies worldwide do not like debit cards because unlike credit cards they cannot earmark funds. If you return their car after a two week rent and they find damage there may be no money in the debit card account for them to grab. If you use a credit card you won't have this problem.

"Extra insurance cover can be taken out on collection of the car.  EXTRA COST"

This is quite true, extra cover can be taken out, but you don't have to. I don't take it out because I have my icarhireinsurance policy that will reimburse me if I damage the wheels, etc. Of course, if you use a debit card you might encounter problems because they have no way of knowing whether you are good for the damage.

You can't expect the rental company to "accept" your excess insurance policy. That policy is a contract between you and the insurance company. The policy would never pay directly to the rental company, so why would they"accept" it?

GuyT It was not meant as an argument just my experience with car hire companies in Spain, I visit 8 or 9 times per year, and have never had a straight forward transaction yet.

Perhaps being Scottish I am very reluctant to hand a car hire company or anyone for that matter free access to my funds credit card or otherwise,

How many times do you have a representitive accompany you to inspect car on pick up and return ???? in my experience they are so short staffed it never happens unless you insist.

Goldcar insist you take out cover for windscreen, tyres, and underbody damage either by a one of payment or 300 Euro on your credit card.

The old saying goes '' You pay your money or take your chances''

My Mondail cover is not ben accepted by Goldcar, sol-mar or Centaur, so to me it is useless, perhaps others have had more luck.

Well, it's a fact of life that whenever you rent a car, or lawnmower, or check into a hotel......they always want to swipe your credit card as security.

I have never had an agent accompany me to the car on pick up. Why would I want him to? They give me a diagram showing scratches, etc. I inspect it & if I find an unreported scratch I go back & tell them.. I  get them to sign my copy of the rental agreement that the car was in good condition on return - they send someone off to check. On the other hand, my excess insurance ought to cover any problems in this area.

"Goldcar insist you take out cover for windscreen, tyres, and underbody damage either by a one of payment or 300 Euro on your credit card."

If you decline their insurance, they will take the 300 euros off your card, but they will credit your card when you take the car back in good condition -  on the spot.  So, what's the problem? If they refuse to credit 200 euros because of a scuffed alloy, just ask them to itemise the charge in writing and send it off to Mondial, who will reimburse you.

I don't understand what you mean when you say your Mondial excess cover isn't accepted and is therefore useless. That isn't the way these policies work. You pay the excess charges to the rental people and claim it back from your insurance.

I am fully aware of how in theory it is suppossed to work, however you only have to read the horror stories on this and other forums how monies are deducted for damage which you then have the devil's own time claiming back.

I stated the facts as I experienced them, and as requested by another forum member, I am sure you are quite happy with your arrangements I just hope you never have to claim for excess on your car hire.

Have a nice day

Hello all

I have booked through argus car hire and my car pick up is Bravo rent a car in Alicante......... they also seem to be based in public parking first floor..... so thanks to tonynault for the heads up on how to access the first floor............ as never done it before.

I have posted before that if you own an AMEX card then providing what type of card you have, all the excess is covered by them. I have used many car hire companies out of Murcia and Alicante and each experience is different and not that great

Just back from week in Spain and hired a car with Dickmanns Alicante. I recieved the exact car ordered (Nissan Micra) with half tank fuel and to return empty. Car hire €53 but fuel €52 so 1 week car hire €105.  Probably €20 to much for fuel. However the total cost was by far the cheapest of all hire companies, I used most of the fuel.

I have annual insurance to cover excess so a €300 charge was put on my credit card, normal procedure, no hard sell to buy their own insurance. Just have to wait and ensure the €300 is refunded ok.

Car was in good condition, 25000 kms, bluetooth connection, cruise control but no ariel or hub caps. Chips in every body panel from other carelesss drivers but no dents. Car came with a rear parcel shelf. When I hired with Dickmanns at Murcia airport none of their cars came with a rear parcel shelf, I queried it with them as I did not want charged for losing it and was told they take them out. I do walk round car and take about 12 photos to cover every angle.

I did get lost returning the car to the depot as its along an odd road from the old airport terminal. Once around the new terminal and twice the around the big round-a-bout. It is a bit of a walk from arrivals/departures down to the bus stance especially with a gaggle of pensioners looking for their saga bus in the way.

My worry about hiring any car is does it contain all the leagl requirements like high viz jackets, warning triangle, spare bulbs/tyre. The hassle of getting stopped by police and something being wrong with the car.

I have known Car hire companies that  Rent an emergency pack with Hi Viz & Warning Triangles. Cost around €30 you get your money back when you return it at the end of hire period

Not sure about spare bulbs/tyre. Spare tyre never known a car not to come without one or a means to repair.

I would always check that you have a spare and that it is inflated.

After hiring for 6 years I purchased my own car. Leave it at the airport. It paid for it'self in 2 years saving on hire charges

Curiously when we bought a new car this year, we queried the fact that there was no spare bulb kit. Advised by salesman that this is no longer a requirement. Spare tyre is replaced by inflation kit. So far as I know Hi Viz jacket and warning triangle are what is required. Plus spare pair of glasses if you wear them for driving. Also for visiting France you need breathalyser kit in the car. Complicated ain't it!

They charged €84 for a tank of fuel when in fact the maximum it would take from empty is €50 - that's a 68% overcharge and stinks of profiteering!

I think they have a highly unethical approach and users should be very careful to use them with the current practice of charging what THEY choose for a full tank of fuel.

its much safer to rent on the basis of pick up full and fill before returning or pick up empty and return empty - then you aren't exposing yourself to a possible ripoff such as this.

We were charged nearly 700euros for 2 weeks last yr.by goldcar, for a fiat Panda.

As we tend to go out to are villa about 5/6 times a yr.it was costing nearly£2,000 in car hire charges.

We decided to buy are own car and leave it with airport parking, works out cheaper than car hire in the long run.

Dickmanns at Alicante ** EDITED - Against forum rules **

Tried them this year and had a contract for my daughter. In the contract they stated: "no charge for underage" (my daughter is 23) and "full/full blabla bla". So I rented a car for one week, guess what? 30€ charge because she was 23!

70€ for the full tank. Refilled and at the desk they didn't wat to deduct the 70€. Yeah, they know you need a car when you arrive and need to catch a plane when you bring the car back in. After 1.5 months, a lot of mails and promises still no refund! If you want Dickmanns, add the 100€ in your budget!

Car was nice, now I understand why... They charge more then another company!

G.

Dickman's are just taking the piss now. Don't think much of the rest of them either (bar Al Andulus)

On the question of finding a company for a short stay, Gold Car do refund petrol not used for short breaks, but they're just as bad as the rest on other things like "insurance"

Car hire costs have been so high that I've now bought a car. For 300 euros a year Seguro parking will collect or deliver your car to either Alicante or MJV or both.

Hi John,

I'm probably about to do a 1 year contract with "Park & Fly" they cost €249.00 pa for either Murcia or Alicante.  I cannot see much difference in the service, both seem to be a cracking deal.

I just wondered why you chose Seguro over Park and Fly?

I chose Seguero simply because they were people I had met before when collecting and leaving rentals from Al Andalus car hire

That's the only reason

Having now researched this properly I reckon Seguro is the better choice - a bit more expensive but you drop the car at the airport, rather than at a facility nearby.

We'll probably use the facility 10/12 times throughout the year, so the difference in price becomes negligible and so I've gone with them too.
